Is it possible to boot the recovery partition without using the gateway software in windows? I tried clicking F10 at start up and I only see options for the C:/, CD and LAN.

Not sure but try F8 before booting to windows and the select "Repair Computer"................
-
You can boot from CD driver, then use a software to make the hiden partition as the active one. When you reboot your computer after that, system will enter the recovery process automatically. I ever did it.

what are you options when you're a lucky refurb owner who can't make backup cds
-
I'd make wherever I bought it provide them to me, or pay for me to have a CD sent from Gateway.

Use http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ to get to the recovery partition or use this http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/mbrtool.htm .
That is if you didn't make recovery disks. I had to use it back when W7 beta first came out I reformatted and didnt make recovery CDs. Once you get it back and loaded make your recovery CDs. -
can you please tell us what steps you took with ubcd..
I have also lost the x: but when i go to reinstall windows it shows up when i select driver cd
Can you access the recovery partition without going into Windows?
