I recently just bought this computer from a Pawn Shop, and everything worked great...except it had Vista. I decided to roll back to Windows XP, but I'm having a really hard time finding the audio driver for the M1634u for it. Any suggestions? I really really don't want to go back to Vista.

Do you know if yours has the sigmatel audio device?

Searching yielded these 2 results you can try:

    http://support.gateway.com/support/...dio Driver Version: 5.10.4946.0&uid=132940000
It will automatically extract to c:\cabs\D00560-002-001. Open device manager, right click the audio device with the missing driver, update driver, manually point to this folder and see if it recognizes and installs the driver.

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=INSPIRON1300/B130&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid
Download the exe, open it so it extracts the files (default location is C:\dell\drivers\R171789). Open device manager, right-click on the audio device with the missing driver, update driver, manually point to this folder and see if it recognizes and installs the driver.

Please post back if they work or don't work.

Sigh. I tried both those alternatives, and they did not work. I'm pretty sure I'm doing it correctly. I download the driver, and then attempt to update it, and restart usually. Still no sound. Is there something specific I need to be doing?

No I wasn't sure if those would work or not. Restarting after installing the audio driver isn't necessary unless you're installing the entire software pack and want to start using the software right away.

You need to find out exactly what audio device is in your laptop and then simply (like it's ever really that simple) download the xp driver for that device. I assume you already tried the vista audio drivers on gateway's site (Although I wouldn't expect them to work anyways). I took info from the provided vista drivers for your laptop series but I still can't find much by searching, there certainly isn't much available online for this laptop series.. maybe someone else can chime in and help further, perhaps using the hardware id to locate the correct xp driver.

I had a couple more for you to try but I found this link with all of those and more. I'd download all of the xp drivers here and still try to manually update the driver (let windows search each folder).

Don't run the setup installers since you are unsure exactly which driver is correct for you.

DO you happen to know how I can find out my North and South bridge motherboard information?

Everest (just like many other programs) will tell you lots of system information

I'm not sure why you need to know your north bridge and south bridge, if you think you need to install the drivers they should be included in the ATI Catalyst driver packages.
