So i bought a western digital 500gb hard drive for my 7805. I put it in and in windows ran hardware installer, it said to restart so i did. When it was booting back up it took around 3 minutes to boot into windows. I went into computer management, tried to initialize it and it gives me a Incorrect Function error. Thats where i am stuck right now, don't know where to go from here.

I don't see the word BIOS in your post. Have you verified that it is being recognized correctly in the BIOS?

Can you format it or use the "create new simple volume" options?

Do you have an enclosure you can put it in?

Even with out being initilized you should be able to format it (if nothing else externally in an enclosure)
If you can get it in an enclosure you might want to run a disk check on it. Its rare but sometimes hard drives are just dead on arrival. If thats the case WD will allow you to RMA it and you will get a new drive.

I don't have an enclosure. I spent a few hours searching about the problem and a few said that this error message meant something inside was wrong. I emailed WD to see if they know what to do. If it's indeed DOA, im going to create a rma with newegg and get a new one.

Yeah thats what it sounds like. Sorry you had it happen to you. Its rare but occasionally it just happens.

If you get a chance i do recommend getting a good 2.5in and 3.5in enclosure. Its much easier to test a HD in those than to have to rip your system apart and then find out after all of that work that your drive is dead. Its also nice for incase you get an infection, you can isolate the disc and clean it within the enclosure.

i wud suggest taking it to a computer shop. ive gotten a 320gig WD recently and thats what i did. if u r not too comfortable with hardware and things get messed up somewhere, thats the best place to sort things out.
after installing, the tech. guy went into the bios and the setup screen, something not specified in the online guides here. maybe he was just checking if things went ok.
after running it allright for a couple of hours, suddenly the comp. did not recognize the drive. a restart fixed that. windows vista does get quirky remember. its been running good since then for then *knock on wood*

What's the name it's listed under in device manager?

Have you tried uninstalling it from device manager?

It shouldnt take 3 minutes to boot into windows, was the delay BEFORE windows started loading or after windows started loading?

If before, make sure the boot order is set to only boot from the devices you want to boot from (Your primary HDD, cd-drive and usb-drive, or JUST simply your primary HDD).

You bought this drive NEW from a manufacturer correct? (Not from an online seller from a forum/ebay/etc.)
