I want to do a clean Windows XP Pro installation on my MX7515 but I got a message saying that my version of Windows XP home is newer than the one on cd, is there a way to install it?

You'll probably need to format the hard disk first using a bootable CD. Not sure what App to point you to, I haven't done that in a while. Try www.bootdisk.com ...

I have a feeling Win64 isn't going to have as much driver support as regular windows.

From my experience doing the exact same thing.

    1) I can't emphasize this enough, make sure you have backed up copies of all the drivers. Gateway does not list any of them. There is somey one around who has a link to a site with the drivers for the 7510 which are what I used.

    2) Boot from the XP install cd. You are trying to install from within windows which is why you are getting the error message.

    3) Since you're getting the "older version" message I can tell that your install media is windows XP SP1. Make sure to get a copy of SP2 downloaded and on a CD before you do the reinstall. Trust me you DONT want to have a fresh xp pro SP1 install connected to the net ever. Your fresh new install will be hosed within minutes of connecting/using the machine online.

    4) Assuming you now have backed up drivers and a hard copy of SP2, just boot the install cd and delete the existing partition from within the install process. As a side note, make sure to tell it to format NTFS (quick). The non-quick version takes forever to complete and for your puposes is pointless.

    5) Follow the prompts and boxes to get through the install. After the install make sure to put on SP2 BEFORE you connect to any other machine. This is for your own sake, trust me on this one.

    6) Enjoy your new install.

    OPTIONAL
go to www.getfirefox.com and download firefox. If you're not using it, you should be.

Maybe you Pro disc doesn't have service pack 2 on it so it assumes home is newer. Probably have to wipe it to get it work.

To do a clean install you need to boot from the CD. If you do this, you will be wiping the drive, so take notice from the above posts.

Hmm.. that doesnt sound good. I was able to boot from Red Hat boot disks when attempting to install on the original hard disk. Maybe something is wrong with your XP boot install CD?

You can make a USB drive bootable but I don't know how to format the USB drive to do it. Do you happen to have an external CD-ROM drive?

I loaded my drivers from my cd but I couldn't find the program that shows my battery level on the task bar, is there a place where I can download that?

I also have a 7515 and upgraded from Windows XP Home to Windows XP Pro without any problem.

I should note that I also got the error message you did at first, I was using a disk from school with the Microsoft Academy. I had another copy of Win XP Pro that I used and it worked fine. The only thing I can think of is the one from my college might not have been updated to SP2, but the WinXP Pro disk I had was slipstreamed to have SP2 already on it.
