Brand new Gateway P-7805u FX laptop. I've been trying to create the recovery discs using the Gateway Recovery Manager, but it will not work. The drives don't even spin up. It starts at 0%, sits there for about 3 minutes, and then finally gives me Error code 205, indicating to insert a DVD or CD to try again.
The burner works fine, and I've burned CDs and DVDs using two different programs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive.

Sorry if this has already been adddressed..

I just went through this with gateway guys... Gateways recovery system is A ONE TIME SHOT THING !!! Even if through no fault of your own the recovery fails on your 1st attempt---QUIT WASTING MEDIA !!! It will never work again !!!

Verify this at 408-876-6001 and while you are there DEMAND they mail you factory discs since your machine is in warranty... If out of warranty the discs will cost u 20 buxx... Thanks...

I didn't even bother with the gateway recover media thingie.

I used Acronis True Image 2009 to image my fresh x64 install, and it worked beautifully. Well worth the 50 bucks i paid for the software:

-Not only does it make an image you can use to restore your system to EXACTLY the state it was in when you made the image, it also compresses the image file to a very small size.

-fast. i imaged the stock 200GB drive, (with roughly 60GB of data on it) all partitions and everything, in about 45 minutes. the image size when done is about 27GB.

-you can access info (copy/paste from)on the compressed image just by clicking one it, WITHOUT decompressing the whole thing.

-restoring your image is easy: use acronis to make a bootable version of the program. boot it from a cd or usb drive, choose an image to restore, and voila! you are restored!

-tons of options to customize and schedule backups, plus a bunch of extra utilities are included.

I'm not trying to do an advert for the company, but seriously, this program is great... never knew backing up my entire system could be so reliable/easy/fast!
    = )

How about an update on how your phone call with gateway tech support went ???

When i talked to them they insisted on charging me 20 bux for the factory recovery system even though I have 5 more months of warranty left on my 7811... I'm expecting the recovery discs in the next few days... Once I have the discs I intend to send gateway an email telling them how "happy" of a customer they have made me... Thanks...

Got the same error (205), gave up, called Gateway and emailed. Got two sets of recovery disks for free for a newly-purchased 7805u.

Two things. This does a recovery image. It won't just allow you to reinstall the OS and drivers. After using it, I still needed to decrapify. Secondly, recovery didn't do a perfect job in restoring the specific drivers for the machine's hardware. In the case of the display and sound hardware, it installed generic MS drivers.

Perhaps the fact that I RAIDed/Striped the HD configuration by adding a 2nd 320gb HD disturbed the process.

Lastly. DO NOT BOTHER with Gateway's online chat. Ridiculous waste of time.

I used the online chat and got my disks with no problem. Luck of the draw i guess. lol. Tried getting just a copy of Vista but they wouldn't bite. I dont think your RAID setup affected the install, I myself have done a clean install w/RAID and without and same results.

Wow, one time use with the recovery program and it seems someone seems to use that one chance every 7805 i buy 'new'. Wierd isnt it? Whatever, so anyways, It would be nice to see a post/walkthrough from a real pro who uses these fx's and goes through the step by step removal of all the bloat-ware that comes pre-loaded. Unless there already is perhaps

I had the same problem. Ran the console and used DVD/RW discs. Worked perfectly. Try it. :) And I ran it 3 times. So there you go. As for the bloatware, you can remove whatever you don't want or need. Use RevoUninstaller. Find it on the web. Anyone got a Quad Core working on the 7805 yet?!

Any one know which discs do what? I got all 3, two of them are labled 1 of 2, and 2 of 2. And the 3rd is labled 1 of 1.

And ALL of them state that they reinstall the OS on the fine print on the right side of the disc. But which one is the actual OS reinstall disc?

The discs you got are probably the OS, Drivers, and Then crapware. Just pop them in any computer and it will tell you which is which. I believe the Vista OS disc is about 2.7 gigs on a dvd. Of course, they all may be dvds. Hope this helps.

If you haven't been able to burn the discs, just call Gateway and have them send you the recovery discs. If you are under warranty they should be free. When I ordered mine they said they where back ordered and would take 3 weeks, had them in 4 days.

Go to start>All programs>Gateway>Gateway Recovery Management. Then you are given the option to Backup or restore. Then you can create default disc or Driver disc. That's it......

I think you need dvds. You may be able to use cds but it'll take a pile. Like 15-17 or so. Just use dvds to be safe. You'll need 3. 2 for OS and software, 1 for drivers. Unless you use Dual layer discs. Then only 2. Good luck

I bought two of the Gateway FX P-7805U. The first one I got the day it was introduced at Best Buy (yes, I was one of the lucky one's to get the better screen). I took it straight home in the box and didn't have BB do the optimization on it. I had absolutely no problems with creating the recovery DVD's. However, that was not the case with the one I purchased for my son yesterday. I had BB do the optimization on it and picked it up today. It's been out of the box for less than an hour and it will not allow me to create the recovery DVD's. I get the same error everyone else does...Error 205. Two items of interest. The DVD drive on the initial FX I purchased is different from the one I purchased yesterday. Maybe the problem is simply with the brand of DVD drive. Second point. Before I even turned the newest computer on (the one that BB optimized) I mentioned to my son, "Watch, I won't be able to make the recovery disks. Conveniently, I'll have to take the computer back to BB and they'll push to have me pay them to make the recovery DVD's." By the way, they really emphasized that I should pay them to make the recovery DVD's while they did the optimization. I called BB complaining about the problem and sure enough they told me to bring it back so they could look at it and that I should really pay to have them make the disks. Most likely, it's the brand of DVD drive that's creating the problem but I can't help but wonder. I'm headed back to BB now. Will update later.

The problem appears to be with the burn speed. You can download the fix by going to the following url:

    http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/data/7117/documents/eRyBurnSpeedFix_v1.0.0.1.zip

Extract the files and run the app. Be sure that the recovery manager is closed while you run the app, or you will get a "file copy failed" error. Once it is run successfully, just open the recovery manager and you should be good to go.

When I try and install the fix, I get a "eRecovery does not install" message (recovery manager is closed). The error 205 remains and I am unable to burn the recovery disks. Gilly05, what makes you think that this fix will work?

    Thanks, ~Dave

Okay, I just got online and used the chat with tech support option. I just bought my Gateway DX4300 on 10/08 and had the same issue, couldn't create recovery DVD's.

Bottom line is this, the tech had me go to the link below to download the Recovery Management Upgrade:

    Tech had me go to
    http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/ery4update.shtml

Download the file, unzip and install. Restart computer and run the Gateway Recovery Management application from Start/Programs/Gateway. The process took 3 DVD's

Disk 1 took: 8:18 to create and 30:32 to validate
Disk 2 took: 8:12 to create and 30:18 to validate
Disk 3 took: 2:45 to create and 1:04 to validate

I then created the Applications and Drivers DVD. This took 1 DVD to create
Disk 1 took: 4:08 to complete and approx. 4:00 to validate.

I sure hope this helps some of you out there who are having the same problem. Not sure if the link he sent me to was for the DX4300 only, or if this would apply to all Gateway PC's.

I probably won't be checking this thread again, so if this doesn't help you, you probably should contact Gateway yourself.
