Ok, Got my 7811 on Labor Day and I haven't used it much. Today I was playing TF2 for about 2-3 hours when everything locked up. I checked the bottom of the laptop and it was pretty hot.
I have my laptop on a wood desk...Is it normal for this laptop to lock up after a couple of hours without a whole lot of ventilation. I mean it's a desk so there's not much clearance but being wood it doesn't really heat up. The spot under the laptop doesn't really feel that warm.
Should I get it replaced? And if I get it replaced, can I have them switch out the harddrive with the new one as I need everything on it.

I'd recommend getting a notebook cooler if you're going to do any heavy gaming.
The problem is, every laptop has a different design, some cooling solutions are better than others. When you're cramming a lot of power in a small space, of course it can generate a lot of heat. So external cooling or no gaming are really the only choice I see.
No need to replace your laptop, unless it's a serious problem.
Try downloading a program to check your fan speeds, and monitor them for a while. If any are not working, or are running unusually low when the system gets hot, than you have a problem with one of your fans. If they are functioning properly, than you just need a better cooling solution. -
I'd spend tomorrow testing to see if the problem happens again by playing games for hours. Also I'd get a program to check exactly how hot your computer is getting. I freakin' reproduced the locking problem 49 times lol.

Get it replaced.
A notebook cooler isnt a bad idea either, but first get it replaced. A notebook cooler should not have to make up for a faulty item. -
Alright, Just played TF2 for an hour on ultra high settings 1920x1200
average temp was: 74C
highest was: 86C
Low was 43C -

This is one way ... perhaps there are others.
-
That's pretty darned hot. I try not to let mine get above 65-70.
-
Did you update your driver? From what I've read, after updating the driver to 177.92, it fixes the lock-ups that occurs on the 7811.
-
so much disinformation.
one time lockup is no reason to get a computer replaced, moreover a gpu temp of 80c and a lockup does not mean the lockup was heat related.
gpu temps as reported are not "pretty darned hot" gpu are designed to tolerate up to 100c.
if you dont play same game same resolution same pc, its hard to say if its too hot(not normal), so better get advise from people with same spec like yours.
try to investigate the reason for the lockup, there are few threads discussing these issues already.
monitor your temps at all time and by all means get some air between your notebook and your desk, some reported 10c drop by lifting the rear of the notebook by 1/2"-1" -
I had my laptop run the F@H GPU client for 9 hours straight and was using this:
(folded of course) to elevate the rear of the laptop (giving about 1 inch off the table) and temps never got above 80C. Runs fine for me.

I would agree to try other things before deciding you have a problem. A single lockup doesn't really mean anything. Could just be the game. If you experience another lockup, then try some of the solutions that have been posted. I would start by updating the video driver, as I've heard a lot of good things about that for fixing the lockup issue. If that doesn't work, there are a few other fixes people have posted. Whatever you do, don't wait longer then 14 days, so you'll still have time to replace it if needed...

It's a Targus lapdesk. They don't make that exact model anymore, however, it works great for my needs

So my temps aren't too hot for my gfx card?
My CPU is around 40-50C -
enjoy your new notebook

I have got to get me one of these.
In all seriousness, I couldn't imagine not using a cooler when gaming. I run a Pacific Breeze...best $20 I've ever spent. -
My power brick also makes a buzzing noise sometimes...is this bad?
-
What program were you using to check your temps?
-
hwmonitor...

Wait? What should I be using?

Using RealTemp gives me temps that I don't think is possible regardless of how awesome the P8400 is. Anyone know what the Tj Max is for this CPU?
Also, the "other" temp sensors normally are about 10C higher than the CPU temps. The GPU temp doesn't seem to really affect them. -
I use Everest with the Vista sidebar to monitor. Works pretty well I think. Haven't compared it yet with many other programs, but I assume it gives pretty accurate temp readings.

What about hwmonitor?

Check it out -7811 locker upper
