I recently removed the cooling apparatus in order to apply some Arctic Silver to the CPU. Help control CPU temps, plus I wanted to take a look inside. However, there is that one "pad" which goes on top of the chipset - does this need to be reapplied?

I wasn't sure what to do with it, so when I initially reassembled everything, I simply left the pad as is, and didn't make any cognizant attempt to re-seat it or adjust it. Now my chipset temps seem high (80*C while gaming).

    Any suggestions?

Yes reapply it. Im pretty sure thats the thermal pad or w/e you call it. I believe one of our members did not reapply it, and he had heatings issues with his x7800.

Anyone can correct me if i am wrong.

Sorry to be so nooby, but when you say "reapply" the pad, does that simply mean stick it on there? Or do I need to get a new pad?

Someone here does tho, just be patient.

Just remember, it cant hurt to buy a new pad vs using the old one...or can it o_o

it should be left as it is, no need to apply any paste there.

So what would happen if you added arctic silver to the pad? Does it make it worse or better? Just wondering cuz I was thinking about doing the same thing..

But my cpu temps are hovering around 50 or less so I guess I should leave well enough alone.
