    Hi all,
I was curious to know how much you guys paid for your Gateway mx7515?
I bought mine a few days ago from Futureshop in Toronto, Canada. I had to bargain a lot to get to the price i got it for.

    Buying price: $1350 + tax = $1550
Were: Futureshop in Toronto (Younge and Sheppart)
Original Price: $1599 (not including tax)

Im thinking of returning it because the new MX7525 just came out. Its the same price has the MX7515 but i dont think i can bargain with the price.

WHA? When did futureshop become a place where you can bargain/haggle prices (unless, maybe, if it was a demo unit) as it's not like a mom and pop store?

BTW I don't see the mx7515 listed on the site?

ps it's yonge and sheppard not 'Younge and Sheppart' :p

You can bargain with anything!. All their products are over priced if you ask me. How do you think they can make a $1600laptop into a $1300 one and still make a profit.

By the way, the MX7515 is a clearance item, thats why you dont see it on their website. The new 7525 is replacing it i think.

Futureshop is owned by Best Buy. Just so you know, Best Buy loses money on certain models (including that one) when they put the instant rebate on it. They hope to make up for it other areas, like service plans, accessories, and services... but honestly I know how much the store pays for products and when you see a laptop with 150 off instantly, the store is losing money.

Im sorry but its really hard for me to believe that Futureshop (or Best Buy) would be so kind to loose money in order for us to get a discount. The profit margin on Laptops and other electronics for that matter, is huge. Specially for a big electronic retailer like Best Buy, who becuase of their quantity discounting, get their products always at half price from the manufacturer. This is a dirty secret that many people dont know, not even the employees that work at Best Buy. :)

TV's the margin is huge, so are accessories... but i know how much we pay for products and i know on the scorecard when we come out pos or not with making money in our department. Its hard to believe, and if you dont thats ok, but im saying I know, and unless you work for best buy, you dont see the bigger picture there. Ill leave it at that

Actually, I'm going to have to corroborate uscooper's story. I sincerely hope you have some kind of proof to back up your claim, otherwise you're just sounding like a member of the Tinfoil Hat Club.

Many notebooks and even desktop PCs are basically loss leaders; the store does indeed sometimes take a hit on the computers themselves, but that's because the massive profit margins are on the accessories and the service plans they basically force their employees to attach, which is one thing I really hated about working there ("She's a college student, what the heck is she gonna need all this crap for? She can't even really afford it!").

Now all of our laptop discounts are instant rebates, starting this year. We actually had some stores' computer departments posing questions on our network as to how to not come out negative in earnings for the day because of all of the instantly lost money. So when the salesman says this is a really good deal... and theres 150 off instantly... it is.

I also agree with Uscooper that Retails stores lose money when they discount their laptops. One reason I would guess they would want to sell with a lost is becuase they need to clear warehouse space for new models. With all the new Centrino Duo laptops coming out in the next couple of months, who still wants to be stuck with a Pentiem M? The store would rather lose $100 to you then losing half the laptop price when it goes on clearence. :p

P.S Can anyone tell me why FS sells USB cables for 29.99, and so happens that the printers doesn't include USB cable? That's where the money's at!

    Hope this helps

haha, actually manufacturers arent including USB cables anymore... because they make more money just by leaving something like that out... and retailers make a ton of money on cables. I talked to the sales manager tonight and he said that we already know that we (best buy) will lose at least 12 million in the computer dept because of instant rebates on laptops... but its what customers told us they want and in the end it will increase traffic into our store and move lots of products. Basically we undersell everyone else.. and even if another store perhaps has a comperable machine for 50$ cheaper, most people would rather pay say 1200 (1350-150 instant) now than pay 1300 and wait on 150 by mail (for example).

The 12 month intrest free option on a BB card helps a lot as well. especially when the customer doesn't pay it off in 12 and gets whammed with the intrest.which in turn helps make back any loss. ( I don't work there, just an observation.)
p.s. Coop, I like BB over CC (Circuit City) because of customer service in the stores here. They both still have thier share of... Hi, IM here for a summer job people but, for the most part, they seem really knowledgable.(sp?) Kudos

I could have a bought a small foreign used car instead..... Oh well, this is cooler.

    Hi everyone,
I was just surfing through this forum and came across this thread. I was hoping to shed some light into the issues discussed above. Now mind you I don’t really have much technical background on laptops or any electronics, but I have worked for a mayor electronic retainer for many years has a senior accountant. I started my own business for a few years now so it’s a lot easier for me to discuss issues like this.
Now what’s being said about the profit margin on accessories and the service plans is right on. Regarding whether retailers, such as best buy, make a profit from discounted merchandise, I can assure you that the answer to that question is yes. Big retailer will not sell a product under value when they can return it to the manufacturer for a credit. This is something that many people don’t know and Im sure they wouldn’t want people to know. Im not even sure if the department managers know, even if they did, im sure they would tell you otherwise. The price that you see on the computer when you purchase an item is not the actually price that the department store paid for that item. That price is set by people like me that work in the background. How else do you think they can afford to pay for those nice shiny buildings? By selling a few keyboards? :)
Im just kidding. Anyways I hope I helped resolve the issues you guys had.
