    Hi All.

I just upgraded to a draft N router (Linksys WRT160N), but when I look at the laptop's Wireless Network Connection Status area, it only goes up to 54 mbps. I thought draft N was faster. I'm sitting right next to the wireless router when I'm doing the testing, so I shouldn't be loosing any signal strenght (which says "excellent").

I went to the router setup page and when I try to force N (rather than B or G), I loose the network connection. B or G works fine.

It makes me think my 7811's not able to operate in N mode. How can I confirm this? Is there any way to force the laptop to communicate only in N mode?

    thanks in advance,

    Frank

are you sure your wireless card in the 7811 is N capable? anyways, N is only useful for longer wireless distances and same networks data tranfers. your broadband probably won't even max out G speeds.

Make sure that 802.11N is "enabled" in the "Advanced" tab of Properties in Device Manager

as pukemon said, you Internet connection will not be affected by this.
however if you plan on massive file transfers, mess with it.

My draft N is enabled in the device manager. Is there any easy way to tell if it's the router or the laptop that's the problem? Gateway tech support was worse than useless.

The only way I can think of troubleshooting is getting another draft n router, but I don't have access to one.

There is no way your internet connection will even use the full 54MB/s of G. The only way, as stated before, to utilize the N speed is for file transferring between PC's on your network.

I have seen people changing WEP and succeeding with higher N speeds. Try adjusting WEP settings. I'm not currently using N so only going by what I've read.

I would like to share files between computers.

I just spent a lot of time with Linksys. They said try setting encryption to AES only (I'm not sure why this would matter, but that's what they said). When I do this, it get "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network" error, and the connection gets dropped. I went back to the Connect to Network area, and right clicking it / properties, I made sure it says "AES" for encryption, but I still get the error. I couldn't find the answer on Google. Any ideas?

If nothing else, I'd like to be able to figure out if it's the Laptop, the Router, or a configuration problem. I guess if all else fails, I'll go buy another router, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

Have you tried it without encryption?
