With vista home premium (Default OS that came with the laptop.) my CPU usage just idle is around 12% or so.

But with Windows 7 ultimate X64 my CPU usage is almost constant 95%+

It doesn't seem to affect performance at all and so I'm almost wondering if this is a false reading? But I don't know for sure....

Bad thing. Maybe driver incompatibility? Look at processes. What process is taking your CPU usage??

The cpu usage usually is lower than with Vista, you aren't running XP virtual machines?

Just an shot in the dark, did you install folding at home by chance? It will come up as FAH in system processes I think. The reason I ask is because I had a friend not too long ago that unknowingly did this and saw the same results.

Nope that's after a fresh install of windows 7. Nothing else running just the PC sitting there idle.

In TM end the CMD proccesses and see what happens, if they relaunch themselves you probabbly have something that is self propigating. As mentioned above it could be a virus or other malware etc.............

Also how new is the windows 7 install?

So I just killed CMD.exe, which when I just did it. There was 2 CMD.exe's running and also a cmd.exe*32 running.
I killed one and it killed the other 2. So far no adverse affects from stopping it and also my CPU usage went down to 9%

ok then now you need to find and stop/remove whatever it is causing those to run. If it is really old drivers or something then update as need be.

yup figured it out... And that's what I did before even seeing your post :D...

I'm using a *cough* borrowed copy of Windows 7...
Ran Chew7 to remove the activation stuff.

That was still starting on boot and was running the CMD.exe's..

Anywho, stopped that CPU usage is normal now w00t...

And hopefully my co-worker has picked up my copy of Windows7 from her school's library...

It is a fresh install I just run Chew7 to remove the activation stuff. Which turns out that one was getting stuck. So went back to my old way of removing the activation. Now I'm good to go. Which I confirmed my co-worker picked up my copy of windows 7 from the school store and I'll have it friday when she comes into work again.

not really, a fresh install would have meant all activations in place and no outside program or other methods to remove activation. If you would have said fresh install with activation removed it would have made sence right from the get go. Then again if you would have mentioned that we couldn't have helped you as it violates TOS of the site.................
