I love this. My wife bought it for me for Father's day. Works great on both 15 and 17 inch laptops... http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=355998
It's USB powered as well, and has an adjustable stand for use on lap and a desk. Definitely noticed an improvement in overall heat as well.
I sound like an ad I know, but I really like it, and it's reasonably priced.
She got it at Costco. -
I'm planning on getting that belkin too. i need something that doubles as a notebook stand and a cooler.

The lapdesk i use cost me about 20 dollars and 5 minutes of time.
I went to Walmart and bought a service table (the little wood ones with the folding legs) and a travel pillow (very small pillow)
I unscrewd the legs of the service table and was left with only the top, then i stapled the pillow to the bottom. Now i have the most comfortable laptable that i have ever owned and its more than large enough to fit the laptop.
Eventually i'm going to chop about 6in off the side so it better fits the notebook, take my router (the tool kind) and hollow out the middle a bit so my cooler fits into it nice and snug, and then carve out air ducts so the cooler can always pull in cool air, and then give it a nice paint job. Shouldnt take me about an hour or so to rig the whole thing up.
Still not bad for the most comfortable lapdesk i've ever owned... espically the price tag and the fact that i get to do a bit of it myself -

i bought the cryo LX. not sure if they sell it in stores since i just ordered it off of newegg but it seems to be one of the better coolers for large laptops like the 6860
-
Cooler Master NotePal Infinite all the way as the air intakes are on the rear rather than the bottom. Fits the 6860 perfectly too.

Its a little heavy, but the 6-8in reduction in size and hollowing out the middle will shave off alot of weight.
If you wanted it even lighter i would suggest a 3/4in 2ft x 2ft poplar board (you can get them from lowes in their "quality wood section") poplar is a very light wood but is pretty strong for its weight and once its sanded and stained/painted it makes a really nice base. And its really easy to work with.
If you get really brave with it you can actually intergrate the fans from the coolers and something like a usb hub into the design so you have a pretty expandable and perfectly fitted cooler that is specifically made for your laptop. And the base cost (assuming you have a cooler) is still very cheap becaue wood is cheap compared to plastics and metals.
Plus its fun going low tech and working with something like wood instead of always dealing with circuts and what not -
Do not get the Belkin cooler. Its horrible, atleast it was for my machine.

i use just a simple lap tray, similar to the ones here

dual purposes

literally, two chemistry graphing lab notebooks under the battery of the laptop have done better. iv seen a 1-2 drop right now. imagine what would happen if i used my fan that is sitting in the garage. -
Anyone had any experience with the ZALMAN NC2000? I was considering one of these found here.
-
-
i have nc1000 which is same like the nc2000 but smaller
i cant say it does miracles, but i am happy with it even tough its dimensions are not optimal for my laptop.
it is cool looking, quiet, build quality is very good and reviews claim it helps
i just like it being under my notebook. -
thanks for the insight. i mainly think it would help for the long run. keeping parts cooler longer. for example, when the laptop sits on the desk for awhile, eventually the desk heats up. and the vents just suck up the warmer air. however, i was hoping maybe the zalmans help curb this warming and consistently provide cooler air to the vents. . . .

ZM-NC1000 isn't designed for 15" laptops? NC2000 is for the 17" laptops. -
yes if i knew that 3 months ago....
-
lol. want to sell me your nc1000? you can use the money to buy a nc2000 XD
-
i am faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away
and actually i kinda like this cooler.
since i dont expect the nc-2000 to do more, no reason to throw an extra 30$.
but thanks for the offer -
dammit. well was worth a shot.

royk50, can you comment on how even the air flow is throughout the top of the cooler. i get that there are only 2 80mm fans for it, i was curious if more air flows out near the back or front or middle or something of the cooler. or could you tell if it flows uniformly throughout all holes?
-
since i don't smoke i can only give my impressions from moving my hands over it.
it seems surprisingly even flowing through the whole top.
might be that the space straight above the fans has no holes, so the air is pushed to the back and only then goes through the holes.
since the intakes on the gateway are on far end putting the laptop straight on top of the cooler is a mistake(imho), so the rubber raisers are marking the holes area and i position the gpu/ cpu inlets just above the far end of it. maybe its the dimension mismatch of my cooler/laptop.

thanks for the info.
