I just realized the HD Audio driver installed on my P-7811FX is: nVidia HD Audio, 8/21/2009 version 1.0.0.59. (I also have the Conexant SmartAudio 221 driver, 6/25/2009 version 4.98.4.60 installed).

Gateway's support site lists the Realtek ALC888S version 6.0.1.5911 as the HD Audio driver for this series. I can't remember now where I got or installed the nVidia HD Audio driver from.

Does anyone know for sure which driver is correct for this laptop? I've been troubleshooting some issues and want to make sure I have the correct audio drivers.

    Thanks.

I would like to know also.
For some reason when I plug in (speakers/headphones) into the headphone jack while something is already playing, it continues to play out of the laptop speakers.
The only way to make sound come out of the external speakers/headphones is to plug them in before opening a program (iTunes) or starting up a game. The problem is that if I disconnect the headphones in the middle of a song/game then I get no sound out of the laptop speakers or the connected device.

Hopefully having the correct drivers corrects this issue.

to OP what has been the problem you've been troubleshooting? anything similar?

Yep, that's the exact problem I've been troubleshooting too. I'm certain it has to be a win 7/driver issue.

the nvidia hd audio drivers you can get those when you download a notebook forceware (video card) driver from nvidia.com

i dunno why they list the realtek drivers on the site since i dont know of any 7811 that have that audio chip. ive only seen the ones that have the conexant audio. the nvidia one is for when you have something plugged into the hdmi port.

as for the headphone issue what you could do i from the desktop make sure your speakers are set as the default audio device. plug in your headphones and then set the default audio device as the headphones. now when you unplug the headphones the os should revert the default to the speakers.whenever you plug in the headphones it should automatically default to the headphones now.

Thanks, ryokowashu. I didn't think either that the Realtek drivers were relevant to the P-7811FX. I'll give your method a try. I'm also using an external USB Logitech AudioHub speaker which may be complicating things. If I unplug the Logitech, the sounds works correctly, ie, sound from the built-in speakers is muted correctly when headphones are plugged in. Now, when I set the Logitech as the default speaker, the sound continues to come from the speaker when the headphones are plugged in. Not a big thing; just a minor nuisance.

Thanks; I may try another version. I have now been advised that my Logitech speakers are behaving correctly, i.e., the sound will not mute when headphones are plugged in because they are USB speakers. I can simply unplug them when I want to use headphones. The real solution I guess would be to find an external speaker with a headphone input.

I got my Win7-64 drivers for the Conexant by merely putting in the 7801 model. They were there for the downloading and work fine.
