Where can processors for this laptop be purchased if I wanted to upgrade it in the near future?
If I were to crack open the laptop and replace the thermal pads with IC7, would this void the 1 year parts and labor warranty?
If I think of more, I will post them in a reply.

I believe any socket P processor, P8400, P8600, T9400, etc. Just search for socket P on newegg or something.
And yes, opening up your system will void your warranty, however I just saw a post the other day where someone took apart there system and did not find any stickers or seals that broke when opened. So maybe you could get away with it? -
-
Yes, they will do fine. I have thoroughly tested mine over the last couple of days on the stock cooling system in very warm room temperatures. No problems running straight for 1-2 hours.
If you want to keep your temps down more, just put a DVD case or something under the back of the laptop just to lift it off the table an inch. That will help cool air flow better underneath the laptop. -

Are the hinges fairly sturdy? A problem with my last laptop was that the hinges became very hard to move, thus cracking the plastic around the monitor bezel.
Also, can someone take pictures of the screen at the windows desktop, perhaps in a game, and maybe just browsing the web? I'd like to get an idea of the resolution and screen clarity if at all possible. And an idea of the screen real estate. -
Hinges are really smooth, easy to open but they stay in place well. Seem to be of strong construction.
Screen clarity is great, especially for a 1440x900. The pictures I posted do NOT reflect the clarity. That's just the JPEG quality of the saved screenshot. Just trying to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Thanks for the shots Tobuk - 1440x900 seems to be pretty decent. I like the folder you blanked out on your desktop.. some dirty videos perhaps? lol just messing with you

No it's my user file. No one needs to know my name,
Glad I could help out with your questions.

I have another question. I will probably be purchasing a laptop, more than likely the P-7805U, tomorrow. Should I just go ahead and purchase it new from Best Buy, or take a risk on one of the used/refurbished ones on Ebay, seen here:
http://shop.ebay.com/items/__p-7805...PrRngCbx=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=15&_sc=1
Best Buy:

Any opinions or advice regarding whether or not to buy it new from Best Buy or used from Ebay, as referenced above?
-
Well - this has put the buying process at a halt for me:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827
Overnight, it has gone down 60 bucks and is now listed as an "Outlet" item.
Is a new model going to be replacing it? -
Not sure what you should do really. I'd say just get it now anyway. Most eBay ones should be fine. Just buy from someone with a lot of postive feedback.

Heck, search the web, the P7808u has been wiped off the face of the planet (at least the US), no one is selling it anymore, not even Ebay. Same can be said about the P-7805u, ONLY ebay is selling it online while Best Buy's are only selling them locally but at limited quantities.
Best wait, I'm with you on this, believing that Gateway is dropping the new FX Line very soon... -
-
To answer your question I got mine from Tiger.
But that is interesting, normally if newegg deactivates an item then it really is done...
Might be worth it to wait after all. -
I have the money sitting around and was looking forward to getting a laptop this coming week. -
Didn't Newegg have 7801u's, then sell out and "deactivate" it, then get some more in for sale since Dec. 08? -
-
I currently have 1460 bucks.
I will probably do the following:
Refurbished Gateway FX P-7805U on EBAY for $895
Belkin Surge Protector and 320GB WD Scorpio Black HD for $113
1 Year SquareTrade warranty for $125
Totaling $1,133 which would leave me some spending money left over. -
-
Yeah, I agree. Get the T9600, and maybe two 500GB drives instead of surge protector, 320GB hdd and the warranty.

Just ordered a refurbished P-7805u from EBAY:

I also ordered a Belkin Travel Surge Protector and another 320GB WD Scorpio Black hard drive so I can Raid 0 them for some sweet access times. Woot - I am excited -
How is Squaretrade for warranties? I also just bought a 7805 on Ebay.
