I set up my HDMI through the Gateway control panel and it's not quite doing what I'd like.
1: The TV isn't showing anything within 2 inches of the edges of my laptop screen. Going to the Resize HDTV Desktop menu doesn't help; the same image expands and contracts, leaving black space around it on the TV screen. Is there any way around this?
2: Also, I can't seem to figure out how to drag an application onto the TV screen from my laptop screen or to launch an application on the TV screen. Right now, all it shows is my desktop. I'm assuming that I could push the start button on the TV screen and the application will start there but due to problem #1, I can't see the start button.
3: The specs for the cable that I bought says it supports up to 1080p. However, in the "Change the Signal or HD Format" menu in the nVidia control panel, the 720p box is the one that's greyed out. I tried selecting the 1080p and clicking "apply" but it just returns to the 720p. Is this due to the TV or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Dan

All three problems are caused by one setting: Extended Desktop.
You sound like you would probably like to have the display duplicated on the tv, or just on the tv. Instead, your display is your laptop and TV combined, that's what Extended Desktop is. For instance, if you opened a window on your laptop display, and then clicked it and kept dragging it to the right, it would move onto your TV display.
You should right click desktop, go to personalize (in vista), go to display settings, click the window with the number 2, and UNcheck "extend my desktop onto this monitor."
If you end up with your display on just your laptop and not the TV, then just hit FN+F4 and it should move onto the TV. Good luck.
EDIT: quick note, problem #3. I think it won't let you go to 1080p because the display is partly on your laptop screen, which I think is only 720p. So even if your TV is 1080p capable, the laptop won't output 1080p because it would have to output that to the laptop screen as well, which is incapable. You probably won't be able to use the 1080p option unless you have the display ONLY on the TV. -
@danja, check your display resolution for the tv and see if its lower than 1920x1080, as it sounds like your tv defaulted to 1360x768 resolution. and make sure that if asked, you want to select 'extend the desktop onto this monitor' instead of clone view. -

Thanks, Jakamo. I looked through the nVidia control panel for solutions but I never thought to go to display settings; I thought that only controlled the native screen.
Everything seems to work now except for the game that I wanted to play on TV: Lock On. When I start the game, it loads for about a second and then Vista tells me that the program has stopped working. Does anyone have any idea why this could be?
Thanks again, Jakamo. +rep.
edit: Apparently I have to spread some love around first. You've got a rep credit -

Does anyone know if Dox's drivers prohibit monitor switching? I installed his modded 180.70 and I like it a lot but I can no longer use the FN + F4 to switch between displays. Indeed, when I set up multiple monitors in the nVidia control panel, both displays show simultaneously, but then when I disable Extended Desktop through Display Settings, the nVidia control panel "forgets" that I had a second monitor and in the "Select Which Displays You Want To Use" box, "SONY TV" becomes unchecked. I've repeated the process about 3 times to no avail. Is this due to the driver or am I doing something wrong?

the 180.70 does need no modification for the 8800m gts
just uninstall dox's and install the original one. fn+f4 works fine here.
