I was looking to upgrade my cpu in my 7805-u. I still have the p8400 that came with the laptop and am starting to really see it's limitations. I'm a heavy laptop gamer so performance is always my main goal. Trying to figure out which cpu is best for me is kinda rough since there are so many to choose from. But, price isn't an obstacle but, I would still like to go the most for my money.

With that in mind I've narrowed down to a few CPU's that I think would be good. My choices are the T9600, T9800, and X9100. I like the T9600 because it's a bid jump over the stock P8400 and is a great value. And I like the T9800 and X9100 because of the higher ghz over the T9800.

I'm just having trouble deciding if the extra money for the stronger CPU's is really gonna be worth it or should I save my money for others upgrades?

T9900 is your most powerful CPU for the 78XX series (gives the same 3.06 as the x9100 but with less TDP)

The t9800 is typically the most you will ever need (and cheaper than the t9900).

Most people that i have seen opt for the t9600. It gives great preformance and is at about the best price point.

The 7805u does support the use of a x9100 though right? Or am I mistaken?

No you can use the x9100 in the 78xx series, its just that you cant over clock it due to gateway not allowing the option in BIOS

So you're stuck with a 44watt CPU not producing anything more than the 35watt t9900.

I just upgraded mine to a t9800 and it has been amazing!! Not worth the extra money for the t9900 for only a little gain. I got mine off ebay. Take my advice and get the t9800...you won't be disappointed.

I'm glad you pointed that out to me. Thanks.

Looks like I have two votes going for the T9800. If you don't mind me asking what kind of games you play on your laptop, what setting, and how well does laptop handle the games?

Yeah some people are still buying the x9100 because its cheaper than the t9900 though. But you have to deal with alot more heat for no performance advantage.

The t9800 is a good solid CPU. I'll have to let other 78xx owners give you benchies because i still use my 6860 (x9000 FTW :p)

I was actually about to ask why is the X9100 cheaper than a T9900? In general the X9100 can be better right? I guess because of it being more power hungry?

You use a X9000 eh? I don't hear much about that CPU. How is it?

wow, almost $600 for the t9800...you could almost buy another 7805 for that much...still if money is no object.

You can find them cheaper than that. It also depends if it's a engineering sample which is cheaper still. But, price in not an object because I saved alot of money getting my 7805 versus getting an alienware laptop.

Think about it guys. the P8400 runs at 2.24Ghz. Not really all that bad. Yeah a t9800 or t9900 would give you around 800Mhz boost plus 3 more MB L2. But to me unless I had a 1900x1200 version of this laptop I wouldnt waste the money. Why you ask? I can play Crysis completely maxed on this thing at a smooth 25-35 FPS. And it still doent even look that good because of the low resoulution screen. So basically your upgrading your processor to increase you graphics capabilities on a crappy screen. It dosent make any sense. So until there is a game that I cant play on native res with descent settings I see it as a big waste of money to upgrade the proc. Simply put, your sceens ability to look "good" is maxed out on this config. So adding more power to that equation is just going to make your screen more of a bottleneck to the overall quality image you see.

You bring up a good point but, one of the main reasons I want to upgrade my processor is for performance. I myself play crysis but, notice it lags if I have it maxed out. This maybe to the other programs I've chosen to put on my machine but, none the less would want a processor that can handle my high gaming demands with best performance.

Simply put I have money to blow.

Haha, well have it your way. Do you have the patches for crysis by chance? Ive got 1.1, 1.2 and 1.2.1 and I dont have hardly a stutter completely maxed out. Ofcourse I do O.C. my GPU but I imagine you do the same?

Alot of my games I have through steam. So they're mostly up to date with patches and the like. Actually I haven't overclocked my GPU. I think I may sooner or later.

i dunno, i think the screen is kind of pretty, looks nice in both games i've installed so far, i have a 24" monitor with gaming machine for those times i want to do 'heavy' gaming. The laptop makes a good way to play games when not at the primary machine. Then again i don't play Crysis, though maybe i should. :)

Well it isnt terrible, but going from 1900x1080 to 1440x900 after 5 minutes really shows you the difference.

The resolution is great for an average gamer. But if you want the best of the best it will be a let down. Personally I love it. But, everyone is different.

i like it that you don't have to completely take the laptop apart to change the CPU.
