Hi guys! Do any of you know of any Gateway notebooks developing cracked hinges like their eMachine cousins? I have a co-worker who was shocked when I told him why his Gateway notebook developed a cracked hinge (along with my “not supposed to crack” eMachine’s M6811).

Yeah, my notebook has a really bad crack that goes almost all the way through on the left hinge. It doesn't affect the screen's ability to stand or the screen's performance, though...it seems to be only a cosmetic issue. Best Buy can fix it with a one to two week ship-off repair under the warranty.

Mine is developing a rather montrous crack all along the back, aorund the hinges. I believe this is a rather common problem with computers built on this case (Gateway 7000 series, eMachines 6000 series). And usually, even if you send it back to be repaired, the new casing will crack as well in a couple of months.

Do you know if it is just the casing or actually the hinge itself? On my Dell there is a plastic casing covering more sturdy metal hinges.

I believe it is just the plastic casing that cracks, however the hinges themselves are also plastic, I believe.

Originally eMachines treated the problem as a cosmetic issue and thought not to repair the hinges. They later decided to repair each unit for free (which entailed replacing the entire screen). Gateway purchased eMachines and the hinge problem. Gateway soon placed its name on these notebooks and shipped them to retailers. Prior to the merger, eMachines claimed to have fixed the problem (an assembly line adjustment). The problem is back. They meant well. [B)]

P.S. Plastic covers over metal hinges

I have a machine with the same problem, the left hinge has lost all the plastic from about 3 inches from the corner, and after a couple months of using the system like that the screen no longer stands up straight. It just flops closed or all the way open like there's nothing giving resistance anymore.

Which model do you have and how long have you had it?
