 My HD is reaching 60-64(celcius) after 1-2 hrs. of playing WoW. Ive already had 2 WD Scorpio drives fail on me, and didnt realize the heat issue till last night when my drive started ticking and WoW would pause for a sec. So i reverted back to windows and checked the temp.63c WOW. I've had my 7805-u since Jan.09 with no probs. Some very long sessions of WoW and World at War the only thing i've done diff. is install Vista Ult. Btw im reaching those temps with/without my RAID 0 setup. Any ideas?

Do you raise the back to keep the gpu/cpu?

If so you are probably cutting off all of the air circulation to the HD bays

Yeah, whoever designed the bottom of the case did not think through the "gaming" aspects of this pc. Im gonna probably mod the HD bay to allow for better cooling such as adding more holes for when the laptop is propped up..... either that or cut a big square in the removable black bezel and implement some metal honeycomb..... ill probably make a post about it later on when I get some time

hmm don't know what my temps are while gaming with the back raised. i'll check and post back. t3rR0r sounds like a plan, i'll wait to see the result. i may be getting the same HD for raid 0 like in ur setup. don't really have the $ right now for 2 x 72k or 500gbs :)

I might try something this weekend if I have time... if not it will have to wait for a few weeks.... but I plan on completing the mod.....

ybc: if you raise the back, the cpu/gpu internals will cool off a lil bit but the HD temps will increase heavily because the hot air is trapped from poor vent placement...especially if you RAID your HD's..... and yeah if you have a money problem just get another 5400 320gb drive :)

I highly recommend calling Gateway support to have them replace your HDD. They replaced my HDD when mine went up to 50 degrees Celsius.

(of course i got it back with the same temps...I guess that's normal temps...)

? 50 degrees is fine.... when it gets closer to 60 is when you need to worry

Ya sorry for the response delay i've been away but i should've stated that the back is always propped during gameplay. 2day i ran a error scan with HD Tune and during the scan the temp was a wopping 61c. I read somewhere that having your laptop on a incline say a 35 degree angle can have a negative impact on the HD. Any truth to that? And as for gateway there useless. All my drivers seem to be up to date after the Vista Ult. install, but i dont believe that has anything to do with it. Ive had the RAID setup since Jan and its only been in the past 1-2months ive encountered these probs.

T3rRor please post when you have done the mod i'd be very interested in doing some sort of mod myself.......time to break out the Dremel.

Yeah, on my 7811 I am consistently at 55, going all the way up to 70 at times! I have been wondering if there is anything at all I can do. I am now elevating all 4 corners of my laptop, but it isn't helping much...

Wow 70 is high. I have'nt seen past 63c. But it seems when it gets hot it ticks loudly and the pc freezes for a sec, then it'll be fine until the next tick i hear.

Is it a single HD or do you have 2 in raid? You should invest in a cooler such as a Zalman NC2000 (which I use and it does a great job).....70 degrees is not good..... speaking of HD temps, sorry to sort of hijack the thread but I am thinking about modding my FX with a thermal sensor that would check the temps of my raid array and output them onto a small lcd that I will mod into my case, if anyone has suggestions or curious about my idea check it out.... here is the link

might as well put a thick book right underneath the laptop, making sure none of the vents are covered. That's what I do and I guess it keeps things cool. Otherwise my HD temps idle at around 48 degrees, but the ambient temperature is around 30 degrees. So I guess its not too bad right?

I run 2 7200 rpm drives in raid. my take on it. those drives are warrantied 5 years. I could care less if one burns up ;)

but in all reality, if you enable raid in the bios you can not monitor temps anymore on it. but I would say mine stay around 55C maybe 60C under a nice load.

another thing to do that has already been mentioned, prop the back of the battery up(the whole notebook) with a bottle cap or something. keeps things 10C cooler easy.
