I have a Gateway P-6313 laptop with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40N drive, firmware JP01. Neither the BIOS nor Windows sees the drive unless there is media present at bootup. In addition, a long time is spent checking the drive during POST. If I remove the drive, POST progress much faster.

A borrowed CDROM drive works fine in the system, so I know that the connector is good.

    Any ideas?

Is there any newer firmware that might help the situation?

    Thanks.

I had an older Everex that had the same issue. Now this may not be yours but it worked for me. Take a good photographic lens cleaning solution and with a Q Tip clean the DVD lens etc. What happened to me is the drive was thinking there was media there when there was none..................
