    Is it possible to play DVDs on a Gateway 7422gx without running Windows? Seems that I saw that mentioned somewhere, and that it dramatically extended battery life.

    Yeah, you could use Linux, I suppose. There are a lot of power saving tricks you can use in Windows (i.e. shut off wireless, dim screen, shut down HD, shut off the little LEDs, slow the CPU etc.)
