I've been trying to figure this out for nearly 2 years, I think. This is the first time I've seen a solution that claimed to actually address the problem I've been experiencing. Hope it works. I'm excited! Thanks for supplying a possible fix that's been working for others!
-
Well, it didn't work for me.
After flashing the BIOS, I experienced these two changes:
1. My GPU is running much cooler (yay!)
2. Instead of getting the usual BSOD after I've been running a video or a game for a while, I get a (blank) black screen crash.
Any ideas?
(Windows 7 X64 P7805u with unmodified hardware)
Driver: 195.62_notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_international_whql -
I think you should try to set the clock of 3D profile lower. I've deal with it before, and i realized that the more I get 3D's clock close to 2D, the less it crash.
, and remember the ratio between those clock (core/mem/shader)
Good luck man ^^ -
This thread is very interesting as I'm wondering how this problem is related to one I had with my 7811. I had lots of crashes too, not just in games but browsing the internet, writing docs, virus scanning. I tried everything and lost a lot of hair pulling it out. Finally it turned out the Seagate drive I was using had an un-repairable bad sector, so my Vista installation would never work. It was so predictable too with the virus scan crashes, cuz it almost always crashed on nvlddmkm or one of the related nvidia driver files. Seatools found the bad sector for me and Seagate sent me a new drive under warranty, so it's all good now. Hope this can help somebody.

What gateway bios are you usiing? Since I installed the latest one for Windows 7 x64 9C.20, I stopped having the problems, but i got another problem the overheating while on idle or doing simple stuff (which has been discussed in the bios update posts). So, I was wondering if you guys are using the 9C.17, it would be good for me to downgrade and try this fix?
-
How do I change the 3d profile clock? I see settings to core clock, memory clock, and shader clock. Do you mean one of those, or something else?
-
anyways i saw an earlier post so i downgraded to 9c.17 Do I have to do the GPU flash again for it to work? My GPU Core Clock is at 600 MHz, Memory Clock is at 799.2MHz and Shader Clock is at 1500 MHz
Temp went down from 70-80 to 50-56 after downgrading bios -
Addition: I have Powermizer turned off with NVidia PowerMizer Manager without any gained stability.
-
Okay, so now I'm using 186.32 (the manufacturer supplied driver for NVidia on the p-7805.) The default clocks are
Core Clock 600 MHz
Shader Clock 1500 Mhz
Memory Clock 799 Mhz
However, RivaTuner defaults to 300, 700, and 200 and won't go beyond 450, 1049, and 300. Any idea what's going on?
-
im getting this error like something fierce. i use to just get random crashing/freezing and now for whatever reason i start getting this bull crap.
-
Using BitZipper, I cannot extract your andros files. Everytime I try to extract, it just closes. When I try to convert to an exe file it gives me thise message: "Self extracting archive could not be created. Correct any previously reported error and try agian." Every time I try agian, it just does the same thing. This is a time sensitive issue, so I would appreciate a response ASAP! thanks much!
-Ryan -
Ryan try using Winrar
-
Cant find it, I have vista 64bit, does it come with it?
-
found win rar and downloaded it! Extracted the files like a breeze! Cross your fingers... here I go!

This did not help at all. still getting crashes every other time I try to watch youtube. PLease help!
-
Both before I did your tutorial and after, this video is garenteed to crash my computer, not saying it is the only one, just saying every other time I watch it my comp black screens."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-mlXEEY0yg" please help! oh, sorry this video is ill-humored and I do not care for it, just the one that crashes my comp along with every other video on youtube and every other game I play!

Version is 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002
Aero is currently off.
My video drivers are up to date
My bios is Phoenix Technologies LTD 9C.20.00, 7/29/2009
My SMBIOS version is 2.5
Model is P-7805U
My Hardware Abstract Layer is Version = "6.0.6002.18005
Thank you for your help, I will try to uninstal and reinstall adobe as you recommended, then disable acceleration. Thank you for your help! -
^.^ disabling hardware accelleration worked! Will this have any effect on: 1)Overall performance, 2)Gaming, 3)Anything else? THANKS MUCH! Should I change back to factory default (ie. instead of your -4 -5 -6, go back to default, or is that part of the solution?). Anyway thanks very much for your input! I look forward to hearing from you agian!
-Ryan -
Oh, and is there any way to always disable accelerants all the time so further crashes wont happen? And will that effect my computer in anyway?
-
Well Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will run for a while, then black screen, then run for about 2 minutes and black screen constantly. Very annoying. Youtube seems to run well. Please help! Thanks!

The temperatures are 73 degrees when it crashes. Somthing interesting I noticed is that at the time of crash, the core clock spiked to 600mhz from 168.8, the memory clock spiked to 800mhz from 100mhz, and the shader clock spiked to 1500mhz from 337.5. also, my GPU load is ALWAYS at 0% and for a milisecond (after the crash, not before or during) went to 1%. and my memory controller load is always at 4%. Thanks much!

-
So set for maximum performance? ie. set laptop power levels to max, graphics to minimum, nvidia drivers to max?
-
-
Alright did that, hasnt crashed since... thanks!
-
still got it.
-
When I try downloading your zip file, winzip says: "this does not appear to be a valid archive" tried downloading it a few times now...
should I be able to open the file? Or am I not supposed to be able to open the zip? weird that it'd have the zip extension though...
many thanks! -
my laptop had been randomly blacking out when playing games, so i used the rivatuner trick (basically set it to constant performance 3d) and upped the clocks to highest default. What I didn't realize is that there's an "extra" profile that rivatuner doesn't detect. Basically, when I use this trick, the voltage is 0.85v instead of 1v. This means instead of the big bad black screen, my games lovingly flash and give me constant nvlddlmkm errors and it doesn't seem to good for the card. I want to get the voltage to 1v, but I can't cause nvflash keeps giving me the eeprom error (because Phoenix loves to lock things), even when I actually do have the actual 8800m gts bios (from here "http://forum.notebookreview.com/gateway-emachines/225982-p-6831fx-nvidia-8800m-gts-option-rom-main-bios-module.html" and used every version and every option in it. Is there any other way to change voltage without flashing?
-
Well damn. I was playing a game of Search and Destroy (MW2) and my driver died twice, then had an EXPONENTIALLY low fps after that. Guess the problem isnt solved...
-
Need help before the 20th. I cant play games such as Runescape. I get a black screen.
-
here is a fix i ran into last night. I done this and can actually play games again!! I deleted 8 different nvlddmkm.sys files
I didnt do every thing that was done here i just took ownership of the filerep folder and deleted the nvlddmkm.sys files.
edit-crap i jinxed it.after hours and hours of gaming with out the crash, it made a triumphant return...two in 10 minutes
-
Might give this a try. My issue is that the screen randomly shuts off with the audio looping during game sessions, and while the Rivatuner method fixes it, there's a significant loss of performance.
Does this bios change anything in the "extra" clockspeed not recognized by Rivatuner? (600/799/1500 one) Any undervolting and the like? -
Andros, I tried downloading the zip file also and am getting the "this does not appear to be a valid archive" error. Is there anyway you could upload this again. I bought a7805u that the person did a bad bios update and getting the 3 beeps error. I haven't found anything that has worked yet but I am a long way from giving up on this motherboard. Would your method still work in the "dark", being as I can't see anything at all on the screen? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance!
Steve -
Nevermind, I opened it using Winrar. Windows 7 64bit wouldn't open it with Windows Explorer built in .zip utility. I'll give this a go in a little bit, or later tomorrow. Trying a bootable cd with some files on it now. I am hopeful and not giving up yet.
-
Well i found a Gateway p7805u for 200 bucks on craigs list says it works in safe mode but crashes when normal mode is running i did some research that led me to this page i was wondering is this an easy fix is it worth it to buy it for 200 bucks and see if this works????
-
gonzo9002, I'd be careful with that p7805u on craglist. A card should work fine regardless in safe mode or normal windows mode. It could be that video card is on its dying breath and not capable of doing proper processing.
-
I just figured if i couldnt get it working i could ebay it and get my money back and i got the guy down to 150 if i can get it working it will be worth it i think.
-
OMG! OMG!! OMG!!!
I did it!!!!
I bought the laptop for $400 off from eBay as the individual had done a bad bios mod and was unable to get it fixed. Having the computer experience background I have, I was sure that I would be able to get it fixed without issues. Try as I might, I was having no luck. 6 USB drives, two different cds burned and nothing worked. I was mostly trying to do the Phoenix Crisis recovery but had given this a couple tries. I decided to buy a USB floppy off from eBay and then was a bit discouraged when I went to use it and the Bios.wph files i had were all over 2Mb, so now I was in search of how to make it work, and compressing the file was not working to even create the floppy.
I finally decided to format the floppy drive. Opened up my computer in Windows 7 64bit, right clicked the floppy, clicked format, made sure quick format and create bootable disk were checked. After that I copied the andros files to the disk but I also created a file called autoexec.bat. This file contained
echo off
nvflash -4 -5 -6 andros.rom
Plugged in the USB drive, and turned on the laptop like normal, not pressing any buttons to get to the recovery section. I wanted a normal dos boot. After the typical 3 beeps, the USB drive was being accessed quite a bit. After it quit being accessed, I press Y, and then Y again. On the second key press, I had a slight beep, and the numlock status light went off. Shortly thereafter, the caps lock status light came on. About 10-15 seconds later, the caps lock light went back off and another beep. I left it for another 30 seconds to make sure it was finished and restarted. VIOLA! Gateway logo!!! I started doing the happy dance. I hope this helps anyone having issues. Questions, don't be afraid to ask.

ok i have followed the instructions to a T and when i get to dos i type in what you said to type in and it says bad command file what am doing right am i missing a step it says C:/ Type in the -4-5-6 thigy and then it doesnt work hellllllllllllp
-
make sure you are typing in the whole statement
nvflash -4 -5 -6 andros.rom
That file has to be on the floppy also for it to work correctly. Sadly, I am writing a longer write up about my new experience with this laptop. New post coming up... -
Well, I got a bit happy a bit too soon.
I got a harddrive cleaned up, since the laptop didn't come with it, installed my Windows 7 Ultimate and got the drivers from my 7805u to install on it. After installing the Nvidia driver, it will not boot back into Windows but blue-screens instead. I am assuming it's because the video chipset has overheated and caused issues. The reason I guess this is because it is a very well known issue with the HP DV9000, which is why I bought my 7805u back in march to replace my dv9000 and was now buying this 7805u with the bad BIOS to replace my girlfriend's dv9000 before it starts having issues. I was unaware that the nvidia chipsets in these are having issues too. Sadly, it seems as if after further searching, more and more nvidia chipsets have this issue of overheating and needing to be reflowed in all different makes of laptops, from HP to Gateway and even Sony.
If I have to, I am thinking about contacting a company I used to fix my old DV9000 to see if they could fix this issue, it only cost about $50 or $60. That is if I can't get Gateway to fix it. -
im on my desktop typing this so i can show you what it says C:\>NVFLASH -4 -5 -6 andros.rom
bad command or file name what am i doing wrong? -
Nevermind i figured it out and i think it fixed it all up CROSS YOUR FINGURES!!!
gonna do some game test SC2 and BFBC2 we shalll see -
Read on your thread that you got it fixed gonzo9002! Glad to see that my guide helped you to make use of a $150 p7805u. Great deal, mate.
-
Kind of a noobish question, if I upgrade the video card drivers do I have to do the whole process again?
By the way thanks a lot for the fix, been surfing around for almost a year for a solution, now my laptop has been running for a couple of months without any hiccups -
And you're welcome, I remember when I used to surf around looking for a solution myself (to no avail) and I'm glad I could make it easier for you. -
PLEASE HELP!!
i have done everything in this entire thread including flash the bios with andros' rom and im still having problems. i also have a 7805u fx laptop and i get this very VERY frustrating crash all the time. whenever i play games like WoW and city of heroes/villains my screen will randomly go black and hard lock the system. the only way to recover is to hard reboot (hold down power button till the system turns off and then manually restart). i monitor temps with gpu-z and they never get above 75C under heavy load. idle is usually around 50C. i have applied new paste to GPU, CPU and chipset and that lowered the temps a minute amount. i really dont think temp is the issue because sometimes it crashes at 69C as well. case and fans are cleans also.
sometimes it takes roughly 20-30 mins before crashing and sometimes it is almost immediate after getting in the game and moving around a bit. i have also tested it with just cause 2, and to my surprise it runs fine! i can play that game for over 3 hrs without it crashing once.
i have tried turning powermizer off, using all the drivers on the nvidia site as well as the dox drivers, changing to force performance3d in rivatuner, flashing system bios to .17, compatibility mode on both programs on all versions available and at this point (after about 3 months of trying to fix it non stop) i have pulled out my final hair! i have also tried on both vista home premium 64bit and win7 home premium 64bit to no avail. ive ran memory tests for the system and never have gotten an error. it will never BSOD its always the black screen crash. i also have NO problems at all with anything else on this computer. youtube vids and flash work perfectly so i am totally stumped at this point.
tnx in advance for any suggestions or insight on this matter
current core clock 600mhz
gpu memory clock 799.2mhz
shader clock 1500mhz

Definite solution to the nvlddmkm video crash on the P-7805u!
