So I have been reading these forums for the past few weeks and decided to buy a gateway p6831fx from bestbuy today. After using it for a few hours, I have noticed a funny discrepancy.
I know this computer is supposed to come with a T5540 professor, and it says that under the device manager, but in system, in the bios, and pretty much everywhere else, it says I have a T5550 professor. Did I just really lucky? And how do I confirm what professor I have and make my computer report it consistently? Thanks!

Use CPU-Z to confirm your CPU ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)
Though based on the fact that all these places are reading T5550, I am going to say you probably just got lucky and Gateway was out of the T5540's! -
Yeah you got lucky, Gateway packed a more experienced professor inside your laptop free of charge. He even has a bigger beard.

So I ran cpu
-
So I ran cpuz and it says i have a t5550 ^^
Now, one quick question, how do i make the device manager correctly recognize the processor?
And one last question: when I was looking at the motherboard under cpuz, it says i have a gm965. I thought my model should be using a pm965? -
The newer P6831FX were released with the T5550. If you do a search on some threads, you will find out that some buyers got those models.
How much did it cost you anyway? -
It cost me $1,100. I was about to buy the 6860 when the sales lady said she saw a 6831 in the back room; it wasn't even listed on their inventory. So, I quickly snatched it up for $1000 plus tax=1100
-
Why didn't you buy 6860?
-
Because I don't have that much money? lol... Plus the 6831 was a full $250 cheaper, and the only diff is 1 gb of ram and some hd space, insignificant to me.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
Good buy

Man, I got ripped off by gateway with my 172S FX!!! All I got was a processor in mine. hehe
-
My condolences to the above...
So I dug around a little more and I guess there are no downloadable drivers for the intel processors. Should I just leave the device manager to display it as an incorrect t5540 then? After all, pretty much every application I use sees it correctly as a t5550. Just want to confirm that it's insignificant, thanks. -
You could look at the cpu or maybe the ID sticker on the cpu if you really want to know what you have. I think your going to find out you do have a t5500.

On my 6860 CPU-Z identifies my processor as a T5600 rather than a T5550. From what I can tell they are virtually the same processor - something a bit different in the stepping.
Device Manager, System and Bios report different professors, P6831FX
