Did anybody do a CPU upgrade that limited their GPU overclock?

Yeah so I recently upgraded my 6831 to a x7900. Anyways before I had a t5550 and I was able to overclock my 8800gts to 630+ and 900 on memory. Now ever since I upgraded to an x7900 which is a very power hungry cpu, my overclock is only stable around 550/850.

What I'm wondering is if anybody experiencing this when they upgraded to a extreme proc? I'm thinking since I have a power hungry cpu my gpu oc is limited because the power brick can only supply so much power.

I figured it out when I switched back to the older cpu and tested it.

Makes me wish that I should've went with the x9000 ES instead of a retail x7900.

Why not get a larger power block (the 180w tagrus) like the rest of us did.

The x9000 is really nice, but it wouldnt really solve your power issue (its a 44watt cpu still) I wasnt originally going to get the x9000 due to my power fears, but after dook found the 180w brick i scooped one of those up and then bought the x9000 and havent looked back since.

Well mine is wierd, the gpu gives the driver error after the 2nd cpu test on 3dmark.

It doesn't crap out during the gpu test but AFTER the cpu. I thought that was peculiar so I have pinpointed it to this.

It sucks because all I want to do is crack the 10k barrier and I can't do it cuz my stupid power brick is holding back my OC's. You guys think undervolting might help?

Try undervolting. But if you get a driver error I think your oc might just be too high. What frequency are your shaders at?
