Hi there every1!
I sold my T5450 and T9500 and I was planning to buy an X9000. I had a T5600 Merom CPU here at home which I puted in my Gateway laptop to use it while I wait for the X9000. But when I first turned on the laptop with the T5600, the troubles came...the power button and the media buttons next to it light up like they do at every startup, however, I can't hear the fans to turn on and after a few seconds the laptop restarts. Oh and there isn't any picture on the screen, it is all black. I tried to turn on my laptop without the CPU and it did the same things I wrote above.
Did my laptop die or this is just a typical behavior if the CPU is not compatyble with the laptop or if there isn't any CPU in it ?![]()
ps: The T5600 is working perfectly in a HP nc6320.

..... Never sell your original CPU if you expect to get it serviced. Since you're in Hungary, that's not an issue. However, the Merom CPU is not compatible with your 6831FX.
 -

Are u sure it is not compatible? Than maybe that is really the reason why did my laptop do these... -

Yes, I am sure it is not compatible.
 -
 huh, good to see this
Than probably the laptop did those strange things because of this. Thx m8!

The problem is, you now have no way to tell if you damaged the laptop.
 -

OK just for my education, why is the T5600 not compatible? Assuming it's the FC-PGA version, it's FSB is 667 and it's on the mobile CPU list from Intel. What did I miss?
Thanx -
I will check it with the x9000

Tybalt39: Good question... -
t5600 is a merom cpu aka a socket M cpu and the t5550 is a santa rosa that uses a socket P.
 -

 And the Gateway's a Socket P model.
 -

Aha, so thats the reason why my laptop did not start...

Whell the CPU did not die so I guess the laptop did not die either
      -

 (Dope slap) Doh!
I missed the obvious answer....
Somewhere I thought I heard the 65nm series refered to as Merom, so I didn't even think about socket type.
Thanx! -

so wat cpus are compatible with the p6831
 -

Hmm... way too long list.
The socket P Penryns will work. So will the Socket P Santa Rosas. Socket M Meroms will NOT. -

Not that you need it(lol) dtwn83, but +1 rep for the good solid info.

i should ask dtwn83 this question then. sorry to take over this post seeing how it is old but i saw that u mentioned all socket P penryns will work. well you see, i saw a P8600 processor that is socket P, from what i've heard it is a Penryn 2 platform so i would assume that it should be compatible in a P-6831FX but i hear that it is not. could you please confirm whether it is compatible or not and if not explain why plz?

I've read that the "montevina" core 2's (1066 fsb) are not compatible with the santa rosa chipsets i.e. the 6831 & 6860's. Different pin configuration or whatnot.
