    Hello,

I've done quite a bit of reading about updating video drivers for ATI's mobility cards, but I would still like a good explanation and "reassurance" that I'm doing the right thing. I downloaded Catalyst 5.7 from Omega but haven't installed it yet. Will ATI never realize drivers for their mobility products or is this the only route I can take? Anyone had any problems out of these drivers? Any additional help or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I actually am using the Omega Catalysts and they work fine. I've used them on several different video cards and on my desktop and they haven't ever been a problem.

    Dave,

The only possible problem using the Omega drivers is that you may fry your GPU if you try overclocking the video card too much. On a basic install and not "tweaking" any of the performance settings using RadLinker (I believe that's the tool) to increase memory speed and GPU core speed, it should work fine.

ATI is currently starting to develope drivers for the Mobility product lines, but it currently only works for specific GPUs (X700 & X800). In time, I'm sure they'll have one unified driver and provide support for all ATI products in general.

There is also one additional route you can take (which is the one I use). You can download the official ATI Catalyst drivers from the ATI site. Download the ATI Mobility Modder utility from www.DriverHeaven.net/patje and follow the instructions to patch the install files so that it'll install on your notebook. This method works perfectly fine for me and I don't have all the Omega driver utilities installed on my unit.

I'm confused, so the drivers from the ati site do not support notebooks. How come the modder from driver heaven will make those ati drivers work?

Are the omega drivers better in performance?
    Thanks

Notebook chips are just variants on existing desktop chips, which is why drivers for existing desktop chips can work fine for them.

For example, the Mobility Radeon X600 is really just a more compact desktop Radeon X600. The Modder found at DriverHeaven will tell the driver to use the Radeon X600's codepath for the Mobility Radeon X600. And then it works fine. :)

I'm using Omegadrivers and all is well....memory shows 256 meg.

I just read in another thread that you can install the new official ATI 5.9's and no mod in needed. I havent tried it myself yet.......

I just installed the Mobility Catalyst 5.9 drivers - they're avaliable for download on driverheaven.

They work great, and even have the control panel!!! It's great!

    Definitely download and install them.
