I'm very interested in the new Gateway P series notebooks at Best Buy and was wondering what the consenus was on buying the extended warranty?

Im assuming Best Buy would charge about $200-$250 for the 3 year plan.

    Thanks

I think Best Buy's 3 year warranty is $399.99, I think you can get a extended warrenty though gateway too, even if you buy it at Best Buy, I am not sure which is the better deal. I have computer insurance though my home owner's USAA, $8.00 per year for $3,000.00 worth of coverage on any computer I own, there is a hundred dollar deductible.

There is also Squaretrade. If you look around the net you can get a coupon and insure it for $80 for 3 years.

This is just my personal opinion, but if you are able to buy it at bestbuy and still get the extended warranty through gateway, I would go that route. I just had my first experience with gateway support, and I have to say, it beats every other company I have dealt with, hands down. I called them up for a touchpad and dvd drive that were both going haywire, and within 25 minutes or so (most of it being on hold) they were both in the mail (the touch pad professionally installed, of course, the other one I can do). Anyway, just saying, their support beats dell, hp, and sony, with whom I've had some pretty bad experiences. And it's US based support, so I don't have to yell into the phone or repeat myself 3 or 4 times per sentence.

Not to step on toes..but Gateway (retail), not when bought from Gateway direct, is the WORST phone support I've used. I'm comparing this to Dell "at home" service where the technician comes to your home. Outstanding service so far and not expensive. GW NEEDS to start offering this.

I bought extra two years direct from gateway for $189 no accidental coverage. The USAA and Suaretrade looks interesting, how was the service?

USAA is just insurance, you pay $100.00 then you get reimbursed for what ever service you get done. I have it for major problems, like my lap top going swimming in my hot tub. I know how to fix most any problem I have, and if I don't I look here :) . For my P-171X FX I bought Gateways 3 year warranty for $149.99 and got the accidental for free. A good rule of thumb is to not spend no more than 10%-15% of the purchase price on a warranty.

Yes, this is a definite benefit when you buy direct. My 3yr. cost more because I bought from BB. I wanted this due to the soldered in GPU. If I kill it like I did on old emachine/gateway, then I'm ahead...

I have not asked Gateway directly, but I'm betting that it will void your warranty. I keep old one handy to swap back if needed.

Ya swapping CPUs while an easy task will definitely void your warranty . just keep that little sticker and the screws intact and you should be fine . this can be frowned upon by some NB users and mods so ....

I talked to my Gateway rep awhile back about vioding warrenties, and stuff like hard drives and ram your fin, but cpus and more "deeper" componits will viod your warrenty. That being said if you upgrade your cpu do what Quadzilla said, save you old one, if you sent it in, put the old one back.
