Hey guys got a quick question. I'm currently running an external 19" analog monitor from the vga out on my p-6831fx.

I keep the lid closed on the laptop and everything functions fine except that on dark screens I notice alot of "noise." Its not exactly noise (white spots or fuzz) but on darker screens the screen is not smooth and the best way I can explain it is that it appears like the screen is overscanning or something. While on the internet it is hardly noticeable if its even there but while playing games its terrible. I thought maybe it was a problem with the monitor using a different hz but I tried everything from 60 to 75 and the issue is still there.

There are other things I can think of trying (diff cable, diff monitor, diff vid driver) but I was hoping someone here has seen and fixed the problem.

Is this common, is there something I'm missing, does it sound like a cable issue? I can live with it but would rather not, thanks in advance.

Is it like, the gradients in dark colours look like strips (not smooth)?

Yeah that sounds like a pretty good description.

You shouldn't have your laptop completely closed. The area by the touch pad will heat up and that heat will transfer directly to your screen if the lid of your laptop is closed.

Try that same monitor with a different computer and see if it does it.
Try your laptop's VGA output with a different monitor.

You have the right idea, just need to troubleshoot till you find the culprit. Could be hardware, could be software.

Try a different VGA cable? If the cable is crappy enough, it can degrade the image.

Is there another monitor you can test as a comparison? It may just be the monitor itself.......

There is but I'm lazy, don't have much to do tomorrow so I guess I'll troubleshoot all I can but hoping someone has done the hard part for me :)
