I don't really have much options as of keeping my laptop from overheating and giving me fps drops during gaming. I have this medium sized fan that I can place on its side and it seems like it cools it down pretty well and keeps it ventilated, but I'm wondering where the best area to have it blow on is.

Well you sure don't want to blow air into the side vents. Those are the exhaust vents. Internal fans are blowing air out of those vents.

Flip over the laptop and look for the inlets. That is where you want to allow air in. Just keeping those uncovered is sufficient.
