So I just bought a week-old p-6831fx here in the classifieds and everything is great except for the CPU. I was just gaming (Assassin's Creed) and the CPU maxed at 83! This can't be right. Please provide some input... I am even using a laptop cooler. It is idling at mid-to-high 50s while my GPU idles at mid-to-low 40s. Is this a normal ratio?
Can anyone help me troubleshoot?
-
i actually wouldn't worry about it. They are designed to withstand a lot of heat and since it isn't actually crashing or causing you other problems I think you are good to go......
-
i would remove the laptop cooler and see how high it gets. 83 with a cooler seems too high.
-
mine idles at 43 and maxes at 52...seen it at 32 once as well...there is something wrong here for sure
-
if im reading it right you bought it from a member on the boards ? if so maybe they had another CPU in there and when they put the old one back in they didnt reseat it correctly . if your comfortable with messing with PCs i would reseat the CPU and get some AS5 on there .

Maybe a dumb question here but you are measuring your temperatures in Fahrenheit right? If that's the case, 83 is not bad at all! Otherwise, if it's 83 degrees celsius that equates to 181 degrees Fahrenheit. That means your cooking the CPU!!
-
It's in celsius I'm measuring. I thought the same thing, Quadzilla. I think I'll follow your advice.
-
yeah, even water boils at 100 degree celsius, so 17 degree away from a steamed CPU
-
nothing to worry about, my thinkpad hitted 93C when I played need for speed: most wanted. and my macbook pro reached 80C for bf2142.
-
Well, I'm not overly concerned about damaging the CPU because:
a) I don't think I will and...
b) It would give me an excuse to buy a t9300 ha!
I got a response from the previous owner and he never touched the cpu and never noticed the heat. I live in San Francisco, and it's NOT warm here. Average temp inside is maybe 65 or so.
I will get some Arctic Silver (unless I find the stuff I bought many years back) and re-situate the cpu. -
I think that is about normal for that CPU. I've seen mine (T5550) hot 80c while gaming. I would think most of them are doing that, people are just not noticing because they are in a game. But if you use a program such as HWMonitor to monitor the CPU and other temps, most will probably find their CPU is hitting 80c or close to it depending on how CPU intensive the game is.
-
Yeah, I don't think people are quite realizing how hot the CPUs can get.
For what its worth, my T7500 can hit low 70s when playing the new Trackmania release. My GPU can also get to low-mid 70's depending on room temp. -
wow, i didn't know that. logic tells me something 80 C would burn me pretty bad.
-
hmm.... I'm not too familiar with the avg. temp of notebook CPUs, but I'd go nuts if my desktop cpu hits that kind of temp... my E6600 OC'd @ 3.2ghz idles at around 32-33c and stays below 45c under full load.
maybe a notebook cooler will help? -
Mine ideals at around 60 deg. and at high performance goes upto 79-80 deg.! try to under-volt! might be the best solution.
-
Its still in range, just a little high..
prolonged gaming can cause the CPU to heat up that high
You can cool off 10-20c with undervolting and maybe 2-4c with AS5 -
40 for the GPU sounds about right.
-
depending on the models man.. sometimes it produces lots of heat. I had an asus Z37s, no matter what CPu i put on there it still hot probably the body is small and heatsink is not big enough
Another thing is how many fans on that system? It's running on 8800GTS... read the review, this laptop is pretty hot D
-
I have not searched in detail, but I wonder what the max temperature is for the T5550 before it starts to slow down or shut off.
Oh I use a notebook cooler with my P6841FX but it really does not cool down the CPU as it has its own heatsink and fan (it may cause the fan from going full speed at times however)... but it does keep the rest of the notebook cool... for example the HD compartment.
Extremely hot CPU (t5550)...
