I'll ship mine to you as soon as my desktop is together...it will be in stock form since my X9100 is selling on ebay with 58 min left and the extra HD is going in my desktop.

I just purchased a Gateway P-7811FX from Best Buy for $869.00 brand new in box, they had it on clearance. I have been reading mixed reviews on this unit, any honest advise on my purchase.

It is a large unit for sure and that will be a issue for mobility, this is my first gaming laptop and have yet to open it up, I was thinking about taking it back after reading all of the bad reviews.

I have no knowledge ofthis product as I only bought it as it was on clearance, is it a good computer and or buy for the money.

    Help

I saw the bad reviews on the Best Buy site under (rate this product), and on Cnet.com.

    Why it is legendary<?

Most sites draw those having bad experience than good.

It is legendary because of the price/performance. Basically, Gateway changed the gaming notebook pricing landscape forever.

$1200 for a 9800gt, DDR3 4gb, 7200rpm 200gb HD, WUXGA+ screen and Montevina technology and then some? Only thing missing from the 7800 is a blu-ray drive for those who desire it. Outside of that, it still is hard to figure out how Gateway was turning any type of profit on these things (hence it's replacement is higher priced).

For the record 08, I have both the former legend- the 6860 - and the 7811 now. The 7811 kicks butt in all ways, shapes and forms over the 6860. It really does have serious desktop power in a notebook that you can fold up and move somewhere else in under a minute lol. And you get a great screen for games and movies without having to buy another monitor.

Something most people don't notice is that most non-college-use notebooks spend their lives on a desk :) Once I realized that, I stopped looking at 15.4 notebooks and went for something that would do everything I was doing with a desktop, only portably :D

    $869.00?  Not fair!

Thanks for thread hijacking. To answer your question though, I have a 2887 series P-7811 FX with the ridged power supply and 9C.05.00 bios. In other words, according to conventional wisdom on this forum and around review sites, my P-7811 FX should have died within the first week or two. Mine has actually been flawless and rock-solid stable. Gateway put Dell to shame with the quality of the P-7811 FX I purchased. Mine was $1250. That Dell I just mentioned was $2,700 and had a number of issues particularly with the screen and casing. I've thus far been impressed by my P-7811 FX and would not sell it (sorry, w0lfking) for a couple years.

Ignore what the review sites and other people say now that you actually have the system. Take it out of the box, give it a try, and see how well it performs. I prefer a heavy and bulky laptop over a desktop any day. You should see how many jealous college students I'd come across in the cafeteria. While they're locked in their rooms to slave away with WoW on their desktops, I was playing games in any location at any time. That's one of many reasons why a high performance laptop appeals to me. About the worst thing you have to worry about is Nvidia and Vista not getting along and thus causing the display driver to to crash and get recovered every so often on battery power.

My Thinkpad R40 spends most of it's time on an Ikea laptop stand next to the couch in the living room so that she-who-didn't-want-me-to-buy-a-laptop can do puzzles, email, websurf and IM while watching TV.

The only thing that comes close to the 7811 (aside from the 7801u on newegg) is the Lenovo Y730 Orange for $1600. Specs ar nearly identical except the Lenovo has bluetooth and fingerprint reader, but lesser ATI 3650graphics. (gets less than half the 3DMark06 score) You can routinely find these at $100 off or 7% or 10% off on the lenovo website. However, I would not not trade my 7811 for one. I won't be selling.

Now I feel guilty as I am NOT a gamer and it sounds like this is a gamers rig, I guess I was at the right store at the right time.

I do play solitare alot though, and I do watch alot of movies and email just basic stuff like that. If I sell it I will post it on here as I am still unsure if I will use this for what it is meant for.

Like I stated my dell desktop broke so I simply went to the store to see what they had, and this was on sale. as simple as that.

the sound sucks on this thing.

Yup, you definitely made a bad choice... for YOU. This is a fantastic laptop but it's for the gamer/power user in mind. Maybe you can turn a profit on it and find something more suitable for your tastes.

BTW, Solitare should maintain a smooth 10000 FPS per second :)

Yes, now some poor gamer is out there without a 7811 because of you.

    I agree ... earphones are a must.

For me, the hi-res 17" was a must and just about any discreet graphics would have done fine, Nikon Capture2 rocks on this laptop. So does everything that I've tried. I bought it with the intent of upgrading the CPU to the P9500, but frankly, I don't see the need at the moment. Don't let the "gaming" reputation scare you. It's a "gaming" laptop like the Dodge Magnum is a sports car.
