I just bought my m-6864FX last week and I haven't yet removed the plastic over the "carbon fiber" palm-rest and lid.

My old Asus Z71v a.k.a. The Nightmare from Hell, developed two huge black spots on the palm-rest. This is playing a big part in me not removing the plastic from over the palm-rest.

But it appears to be a glossy faux carbon fiber print from the look of it.

In some reviews of FX laptops that I've googled, the reviewers state these laptops are made with carbon fiber, while others say it's faux carbon fiber.

Its painted; not real. I deal with carbon fiber a lot as my hobby is automotive racing. I am intimately familiar with it.

    How... "intimate"?
    o.0

Pity that the quality of the materials in these laptops aren't better. They get scratched too easily.

With the price that they are you have to cut a corner SOMEWHERE. Just be gentle with her.

Just think how much it would cost if it was made out of real carbon fiber.

Would the laptop be lighter if it was made of all real carbon fiber? I can't imagine the light plastic shell getting any lighter.

Carbon fiber in this type of application would probably be less likely to be used to reduce weight that it would be to stiffen the chassis to allow the whole thing to be made smaller and with less reinforcement. The actual weight of the carbon fiber vs the plastic would be splitting hairs. There have been a few notebooks made of carbon fiber, Sony had a special Japan only ultra portable that was 3500 bucks or so that was made from it. Also the costs of carbon fiber, especially if it doesn't need to be shown isn't really that outrageous.

The start up costs to make it correctly (vacuum bagging, autoclave and molds) to take full advantage of it are somewhat expensive but if you use it in large scale its not so bad. Carbon fiber also is somewhat impractical especially in woven sheets that most car enthusiasts are familiar with for looks as well as weight reduction because they're only strong against forces that are applied across the grain, carbon fiber actually shatters pretty easily if its struck parallel to the grain, whacking the corner of your laptop for example could break a chunk of it off pretty easily unless the corners were carefully designed and rolled.

There's a pretty good assortment of carbon fiber parts bolted on the cars in my garage, and I used to work for a racing parts manufacturer, we never got into carbon fiber because at the time supply of raw materials was difficult (most new aircraft use it extensively) but I did quite a bit of research on it for that as well.

Whew, I am glad that it isn't real carbon fiber. I am already paranoid that some meth freak will steal my laptop for the real copper trim.

My sister just got a new Sony notebook from Japan(husband in the navy) and that thing has a carbon fiber chasis. Light as a feather. But I like the heft of the 7811, "weight is sign of reliability" to quote Boris the Blade, or the Butcher, whichever you prefer.

Plus it was 2 grand and inferior in every way...ok it was decent, but still no blu-ray for that money?

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I kind of figured it was plastic body with a carbon fiber body, because for the price of this laptop I can't imagine the body being made with real carbon fiber.

I was just curious, because I know nothing about carbon fiber and some review sites that I found on google are toting this notebook as having a carbon fiber chassis. I just wanted to get my facts straight.

But all in all, this is a sweet notebook for a budget price. For this price it's hard to get a notebook with a 7200rpm hdd and class 2 dedicated video card. Plus the body seems quite study and has the grey brushed aluminum.

The keyboard is quite nice too. Keyboards on some other budget priced notebooks I find are weirdly arranged and the keys are weirdly spaced. I can play Battlefield 2 and CS quite comfortably without hitting two keys at once when I switch weapons etc.
