My nx860xl gets very very hot and the GPU fan barely ever comes on. Anyone know of a utility or some other way to get the fan to come on sooner? I looked in the BIOS but did not see any settings for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

speedfan maybe?
-
I tried speedfan. No go. The fan does not show up.
-
cooling pad then =/
-
Yeah. Running supreme commander really gets my 860 cookin. It runs great until I hit 94C, then it starts to stutter. You definately could cook an egg with the blast of hot air out of the side.
-
wow...fans should be able to keep that down.
can you run speedfan and tell me when the fan starts running at what CPU temp? -
I looked at speedfan but not sure how to get it to show the fan speed. The fan is definately on high speed though. As I recall it really kicks in with GPU temps around 70-75C. I'll have to pay closer attention to get an exact measurement.

Fabio,
Did you ever find a way to manually control the fans, especially the vid card fan, on your computer? -
tried NHC (Notebook Hardware Control)?
cheers ... -
Yep, I use NHC to monitor the CPU temps, but I don't see how to use it to affect the fans?
I use the "nVidia Display" program that came with the computer to display the GPU temps. The GPU runs 67-69C just using Windows for word processing, email, etc. Running Supreme Commander the GPU will get up past 76C - I've got a BYTECC cooling pad on order from NewEgg... -
Sorry to reply to my own post, but...
I'm sitting here using the computer on battery, watching the GPU temps climb to 88C and wondering:
1. How hot is so hot it's damaging the GPU??
2. Is there someway to over-ride the computer's refusal to turn on the vid card fan when the computer's running on battery? -

I'm afraid programming the ACPI Control System is beyond me:

I've searched a bit for one already written for my notebook but so far haven't found anything.
Thanks -
I have the same laptop, just got it last week. Wicked hot, definately not a "laptop"!
I get instant BSOD when trying to run NHC (with the patch for Duo Core, didn't try it without the patch) and had to boot to safe mode to uninstall it. Fanspeed gives me my temps but no fan control or speeds. Internal temperature seems quite good actually at about 45 C, think the air coming out is hotter than that.
But this is just to *bump* this up, I would live with more noise and less battery life to let my new baby run a little cooler. Thanks -
mkent,
I monitor the GPU temps with the nVidia tool that came with my laptop. To access, right click on the desktop, select "NVIDIA Display" then "Laptop Display." I'll play Supreme Commander in windowed mode with the GPU temps and CPU temps displayed on the right edge of the desktop to monitor the temps.
To try and deal with the heat, I did two things. First, I did this:
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread104458.html
In addition to improving the cooling, especially on the CPU (there was no paste there at all), is it showed me how poor the cooling is, i.e., neither fan sits on either processor's heat sink--both fans try to blow air indirectly across the heat sinks then throught the heat pipe's radiator.
The second thing I did was get a BYTECC Notebook Cooling Pad:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834999336
I purchased a plastic cooling tray at CompUSA first, but its fans blew AWAY from the bottom and interfered with the cooling. I tried reversing the polarity of the DC to the fans but the fans wouldn't run that way.
My BYTECC came with the fans blowing the right way (up into the laptop base) and can be reversed (by removing then flipping the fans). If/when the BYTECC fans die, I might replace them with larger fans and/or cut new holes to reposition them directly under the laptop's fans.
As it is right now, it stays cooler. Not a lot cooler but tolerable (for me). If I pause Supreme Commander & close the lid, when I come back GPU temps are sometimes just reaching into the 80's (C). With the lid open, I can sometimes get the CPU to 45C and the GPU to 76C.
Also, I forgot - the very first thing I did was get bigger "feet" for the laptop. I went to a local huge hardware store (The General Store in Spokane) and found self-adhesive square plastic "feet" (about 3/4" on a side-1/4to3/8" thick) and put them on all four sides then used thick (new) post-it notepads to boost the rear up - that in and of itself helped a lot.
I also closely monitor temps when I'm on battery as the fans don't come on when on battery.

Thanks for the tips. Will try the bigger feet, not sure I feel like taking her apart just yet!
I will have to try and reinstall my NVidia driver/control panel, as the only options I get are "3D Settings" and then if I click "Display" the only item is "Multiple Displays". Thought it rather sparce but still getting used to finding things in Vista.

I've got XP Media Center.
Sorry about that, good luck to all you Vista-testers.

hi
If u search the forum u will find a couple of post debating this problem
My laptop has a problem that it randomly heats up, usually 75ºC.. it runs at idle at 44ºC.
I'm able to keep it at 44ºC at all times because I bought a Bytecc cooling pad that I advise you to do too.
You might want to check the windows task manager to identify which process are working that are increasing the temp so much and maybe turn some off. -

Yeppers, that's where I found the bit about raising the bottom of the case off the desk surface. Was it first posted by a guy using Altoids boxes?

Is that CPU or GPU?

Must be CPU.

Good advice. Have you replaced the fans and/or repositioned them?

For gaming especially, it seems good advise to run "msconfig" and disable as many of the "Services" and "Startup" items as possible to maximize performance.
Thanks,

That's odd.... you have working temperature monitoring in the NVIDIA control panel (under Windows XP)? What video card do you have?
I have the M685 with the GeForce Go 7600, and the NVIDIA panel does not give me any thermal monitoring. Rivatuner works, but if I put my laptop into suspend, when I resume the indicated temperature will be off into negative 100-something C. -

Yes.

Geoforce GO 7900 GS
Video BIOS 5.71.22.48.06
ForceWare Version 86.02
All as it came from Gateway. -

I was having heat problems with my 860xl so I decided to do put on some arctic silver V. I was getting stuttering in not so intensive graphical games so I knew something was wrong. What a difference the AS5 has made. I am seeing at least a 20C difference. This was in addtion to removing some dust bunnies that had accumulated so I am very pleased with the results. I was worried there wouldn't be proper seating of the heatsink with the chips upon removal of the thermal pads, but everything seems ok. CPU idle at 45C and GPU 49C. Much much better than the 76C idle GPU temp before.
