The fan in the lower right corner, is not active... Could that be why my GPU spikes to 95c when gaming?
What to do? :-S

actually thats the cpu fan.
anyway get it fixed asap -
Run Orthos/Prime95, and checkout the max temp of the CPU.
If the fan is broken, best to get it fixed. Weird, the system boots, and the BIOS doesn't beep. -
My CPU doesnt ever get hot though... Its only the GPU.
You sure about that royk? -
My CPU temp maxes at 50c, with orthos
Edit: BTW - should that fan (in the lower right corner) be on at all times? -
With the thermal module cover removed, boot the system. BIOS will initiate the fan, and it should spin, and you can find out if the fan is actually faulty or not.
The CPU-GPU have a shared heatsink and fan. Run rthdribl to stress the GPU as well, and monitor temps with HWMonitor. -
Thanks Andy - Ill reboot now.. And see if this thing moves.
-
I just rebooted.. It jolts, but doesnt really move... So I take it, that its broke?
Shouldnt my CPU temp be sky high then? -
in the gateway fx the gpu and cpu does not share a heat sink nor a fan, the cpu fan blows to the right back side of the laptop, while the the gpu blows to the left side.
it is strange what you describe...
edit **********
and no it shouldnt be on altime, but it should spin up while stressed (orthos)
try stressing cpu /gpu (furmark is good and easy) see if they spin up -
Have you tried to raise the back end of your notebook to increase the airflow? That is what most users have done, and it's turned out to be the most effective way to solve the GPU overheating. -
Thanks xtyfyb - Ill try elevating the back next time im gaming...!
It just really worries me, that the CPU fan isnt working.. So the fact that its not moving, wouldnt have anything to do with my 95c GPU spikes? -
1. Purchased a new Targus 120W AC Adapter ~$30 - fixed the power brick sizzling.
2. Switched over the 32 bit Vista - some games I play hated 64 bit.
3. Propped the back of my 7811FX to increase airflow - solved GPU overheating.
Obviously, you don't have to do any of this; but it solved most of the problems I had with my notebook, and now I love it. -
I guess a FX user knows best. From the image it seemed to be shared.
Run rthdribl, and see if you can feel the fan blowing from the left side....
Also, 50*C, whilst stressing, is a weird CPU temp. -
yes i am sure its the cpu fan (you cant get to the gpu fan without taling the whole rig apart).
if under orthos your machine tops@50 dont worry at all (bit weird as andy said)
as stated above no correlation between cpu and gpu temps.
test you gpu fan by running furmark in a window mode while using hwmonitor for watching the temps and put your hand just back of the dvd drive too feel if hot air is blowing out, if under furmark your gpu temp skyrocketing and no air is coming out then you have a fan problem.
other wise just dust clean your machine prop it and or get a notebook cooler.
andy thats the northbridge and the cpu that are sharing the heatsink -
*Sorry about bad lighting and low-res - hopefully you'll get the idea.
50*C while stressed is normal for me; my CPU temp maxes at around 52*C while gaming.
-
Thanks for the picture ! Nice to have!
btw, why is 50 a weird temp? -
what cpu you have ?
its a bit low for heavy stress as orthos provide. -
Ive got a t8300, undervolted at 0.9625.
Btw, I just ran orthos again, its 51 now. -
its cooooooool
-
indeed! I cant help thinking what my temps would be if my fan actually worked!!
-
it is working i assure you. do test the gpu temps...
-
You mean whilst having the back elevated?
I just downloaded furmark, it wont work.. Could it be an issue with Vista x64? -
got it from here ?
should work -
Made it work now
What should I look for? -
Have HWMonitor running in the background and take note of your GPU temps as you are using Furmark.
-
run it in window mode (1440x900) while hwmonitor on the side, when the gpu temp will go up you should hear and feel hot air coming out on the left side (next to dvd tray)
-
how many times should i run it?
after 1 run, the GPU was at 70c -
after or while ?
if while, thats seems ok.
so just make sure you are not blocking any vents while gaming, give it some space and you should be fine. -
After
So I should be ok?
I shouldnt be worried about the CPU fan or anything? -
Just ran furmark again - it jumped to 75c.. and thats all in only 60 secs of testing :S
-
furmark is a beast on the GPU..if it can handle a minute or 3 of furmark..gaming wont be any issues.
-
furmark is brutal, thats how it is
-
3 mins of Furmark = 79c
I just wondered, why the last time I played CoD4 (for 40 mins approx) it jumped to 95c. -
-
Ill try running CoD4 and Furmark again later, with the back propped up - and hopefully it will make a big difference
Is 79c a lot considering a 3 minute Furmark test? -
-
My CPU fan runs all the time. My CPU never goes over ~50C when loaded (F@H SMP client).
-
Furmark, by default will only run a minute to produce benchmark results. Uncheck the "Fullscreen" box and click on the "Stability test" radio button, and let Furmark run for a while, keeping an eye on the temps in HWMonitor. Temps will climb rapidly at first and after a minute or two, climb more slowly. How long does it take Furmark to get to 90C? 95C? After it hits 95C does it still keep going up?
-
Im getting 87c with the back elevated...
-
If the CPU max temp is 50c, is it then safe to assume that the CPU fan does in fact work? Even though it never spins? :S
-
Honestly, I've never noticed my cpu fan spinning while I'm working on the laptop. I have noticed it spinning a couple times after the lid has been closed for a long period of time and it was supposedly in "sleep" mode.
Fan not working?
