My laptop always had problems with its fan. The Fans goes loud randomly (this is including after the BIOS screen loads) and then the laptop dies. No BoSD or anything, just a simple power off. This happens during cold boot more often but never when im using battery power. I notice it is more stable when it gets warmer (not 100% sure). I suspected it was the power supply (AC adaptor) and i got a replacement. This "new" power supply is a huge brick and has a built-in fan, also with different male connectors for different brands of laptop. And for some reason, it smells especially when the fans kick in. This one is rated 19V with 17.89A max DC and the bottom of the notebook says 18.5V.. im not sure if it makes a difference.
Now, it is strangely behaving today. The fans were repeatedly going on for two seconds, then turns off, and then turns on again...etc. Then after a few of cycles, the fan went loud and the laptop dies. This never happened before and I suspect that this new observed behavior might be clue to the underlying problem.
I think that my new power supply is also defective, or both the old and new power supplies might not be defective after all--it might be the BIOS or the mobo. And i forgot to mention, since my laptop was replaced with another motherboard, the BIOS is from an E-machines (NSF03.P0), not the original Gateway 7422gx one (NS.00.05). Using winplash xp, i wasnt able to flash the BIOS.
I have like 3 weeks until my Best Buy extended warranty will expire.
