The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.
I just ordered the Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM 2.5" notebook hard drive from Dell for $140. They finally came down in price - little scary to see them rocket up to $250 a few weeks ago. I am upgrading because of the huge amount of time it takes to boot up my 7422GX. Of course, some of that is becuase of all the junk that is loading that was factory installed. I plan on using the new hard drive exclusively for my photography/business work and installing XP Pro and just a bare minimum of applications. I will keep the stock drive/configuration for normal day-to-day work. I report back with the differences.
Memory would be first for me if I had any room for expansion without voiding the warranty. On mine (a 7426), I would first upgrade the OS (from Home to Pro), and then get a faster 7200RPM hard drive (has to be the same 100GB or higher).
I thought of switching the OS to Solaris 10, but don't feel like searching high and low for drivers.
