ive defragged my hard drive 3 times using O&O pro, trying both the stealth and space options, they didnt drop my fragmentation percentage any, and the windows defrag tool just made it worse. whats the deal?

I've never liked O&O at all. Use a cracked version of Diskeeper or download Auslogics' free one.
You might have some problems with Diskeeper 64-bit, though - not with the program itself, but merely because no one has a working keygen/crack for the x64 version yet. -

On topic...how did you get 30% fragmentation on your HD? I havent defraged in years and i've never seen double digits in my computers.
Also if your running Vista it does a fast and dirty defrag for you every now and then. -
I had that same problem with O&O. I didnt try any other methods of defragging though because i was going to format anyway and install XP.

I agree with the article. Disk defragmentation is pretty much an antiquated operation that isnt really needed anymore.
With as fast as hard drives are now days (and the level of cache they come with) even with a 0% fragmented disk your not going to have noticable preformance gains doing nearly anything. So other than the BS defrag that windows does in the back ground i never worry about it.
I still cant figure out how you got a 30% fragmentation on a machine that has barely been out a month and a half
did you install windows 98? That was a horrible OS for organizing data.. -
In other news, the makers of CCleaner have a new tool out called DeFraggler that's freeware, works in Vista64, and will even allow you to defragment individual files.
As for the Exec Outcomes Rep, no hard feelings. I've used your products legally for years now, but I've since moved to using the default tool since I don't feel like paying 100 bucks for 768GB+ support. -
