Just thought I would inform everyone (including buyers of refurbished or used/second hand) Gateway laptops that Mentor Media are still fullfilling the Gateway Windows 7 upgrade.

I got my upgrade DVD in the mail yesterday for free for my Ebay purchased (used) U7850.

Yes. As far as I understand it works for ANY Gateway P78xxx laptop no matter purchase date or purchase place. All you need is model number and intact serial sticker on the underside of laptop.

Took me 2 weeks to get, and worked like a charm. Now running Windows 7 x64 premium.

I guess 7805u is not eligible. The form will not let me enter lines 2,4, and 5.

Let's not forget that students (or anyone else with a *.edu email address) are elegible for Win7 Professional for $30. It's a good deal if you're interested in upgrading and don't qualify for this free route.

TBH, $30 is really about all it's worth. Especially when you consider all the free alternatives that are out there.

I can't imagine walking into Office Max and calmly plopping down $319.99 for Windows 7 Ultimate. Does anyone really do this?

I'd say a max of $50 for upgrade looks ok right now. Anybody buying a new laptop can get it for 50$(Win 7 HP Upgrade). Even if you don't need it, there might be a few willing friends of yours who wont mind that price. Or before you go out shopping for a pc/laptop, let know your relatives/friends about it.

My 7805's serial is not eligible, not that I'm surprised since I bought it the day they went on sale.

The model has nothing to do with the eligibility, its the date of purchase. Especially if you have registered with Acer before June, then dont even think of giving a shot for this free upgrade. Coz most of the 7805 owners (like me who grabbed it even b4 the release date) would have already received a mail from them asking to renew or extend the warranty thing.

I don't know of any free OS's that support TRIM right now. I understand if you don't like Windows or Microsoft but saying Win7 is only worth $30? You must not want to be taken seriously.

It's by far the best initial release OS that Microsoft has ever had.

Sorry for all of you that seem to be having issues with eligibility but I figured that it was worth posting. Worked for me and I couldn't be happier Win x64 pro has been a great upgrade for me!

I entered mine, I honestly didn't remember when I purchased so I just entered the first date of eligability, I don't have the recipt and never registered it but looks like it went thru. Thanks cause I was just about to waste $100 for it cause i couldn't find a friend with a .edu e-mail lol.
