    GPU Thermal Interface Material

    Hey everyone,

    I'm new to this community so to start things off, hi!

    Anyway, I recently purchased a Gateway M-6862 from Best Buy. I upgraded the CPU to a T8300 and I used AS5 as thermal interface material. Now the problem is that in the process of upgrading the CPU, I actually ripped the thermal interface materials between the GPU and chipset. I tried my best to reattach them contiguously, but I'm sure there are micro gaps filled with air bubbles. My laptop GPU and chipset temperatures have gone up and I was wondering if anyone knew what the thermal interface material was on the gpu and chipset and where I could get it. I tried to use AS ceramique but there is a big gap ( 1mm) between the heatsink for both GPU and chipset. I attached a picture from another thread to give you a look. The grey pad is for the chipset and the pink putty-like material is for the GPU.

    On another note, my CPUID idle temperatures are

    ACPI: 54
    CPU: Core 0: 14 Core 1: 19
    GPU: 55

    I just wonder could it be that the AS5 is transferring more heat to the heatsink so the GPU and chipset might height up by the bypass.

    Do the copper mod if the gap is about 1mm. This will improve your temp drastically.

    AS5 will not cover this gap.

    Or if you live in Australia, i can just send you a pad. I have a sheet of it.

    Man, really? I mailed a guy in Australia a thermal pad from here in the US, could have saved some time/postage just by getting it from you :p

    Can I do the copper mod on the FX6860 ? (I upgraded to a T9300)
    Can it also be done on the FX6860's GPU?

    I play a lot of games on my laptop and notice the temps are quite high.

    Can I echo that question for the 7811? I own both a 6860 and 7811, and I'll definitely be upgrading the 6860 to a T9300/9500 (depending on how the prices drop as the i7 chips roll out :D ) and I just got the AS5 for the 7811's CPU.

    So I'll take all the info I can get on this as I'll be doing both CPUs with AS5. And if I crack open one (the 7811) to do the GPU, I'll do them both side by side.

    Wait, the copper mod link says 1.5mm. What do we need for our purposes, 1mm? 1.5mm? other?

    You can only do the copper mod to gpus that use a thermal pad. Do not try use it on a gpu which is directly in contact with the heatsink. Its pointless and will crack the GPU die.

    The copper mod is just a substitute for the crappy thermal pad they use which barely conducts heat.

    You will need to find out how big the gap is on your notebook.. Its usually 1mm to 1.5mm.

    Well for my gpu it seems to be some sort of pink putty material instead of a thermal pad. Will that still work?

    as flipfire said the mod is aimed at replacing a thermal pad.
    both the 6860 and 7811 gpus have a direct contact to a heatsink.
    the mod has been done by few fx owners on the chipset.

    look at this thread for more info.

    Oh, thanks I didn't realize that. Darn, I was hoping to drop the GPU temp on the 7811 to a point where it would stay under 40 degrees - that's why the fan keeps kicking on, the GPU creeps up slowly from 36 to above 40, and on goes the fan lol.
