I noticed my games started running very poorly recently. I ran a 3dmark and got a score in the 3700's. it typically gets in the 8500's. I tried out a few different drivers and nothing seems to be responding. I can't even play videos well. So i guess I'm gonna have to send it in to get fixed. I was wondering if anyone had advice on what to do before sending it in or even if their was something else i could try before resorting to that. thanks. oh and it's a 7811.

well i would try monitoring your GPU temps to determine if it's simply overheating, or if the GPU is actually faulty.

yeah i originally thought about that but then i realized that it does not get hot at all it no longer blows any hot air out. and i have turned it off and let it sit and then powered it back on and ran the test and it is very slow from the beginning, it starts that first test running at like 20 FPS and it used to run it at 60+ FPS.

what about your settings? powrmizer, etc. check if the card runs 100% of its power.
-
First got to the battery icon in the taskbar and see if you didn't accidentally switch the power plan to balanced or power saver. If it is still on performance, then go to the Nvidia Driver Guide and get the latest Nvidia system tools. Install it and use the NVIDIA system monitor to monitor GPU and CPU temps and the GPU clock settings (should be 600MHz memory, 799MHz core and 1500MHz shader when gaming,100/168/337 are common clock speeds whin in Windows desktop). That would be the next thing to look at. If that all looks good, install HWMonitor and keep an eye on the temps when gaming in a window.
Are you overclocking anything? -
fan working?
-

thanks for all the replies, yeah the fan is working, still annoying! no i wasn't overclocking anything but i will try again with the system monitor and make sure it is using all its power.
-
use hwmonitor and gpuz to monitor your temps and frequency while running a game or 3dmark06. post your results. before you sending it over (if) might want to reinstall windows just to make sure its an hardware issue (might save 4-5 weeks of waiting).

well i went ahead installed dox's driver and ran another test monitoring everything and it worked perfect got a 8726. I really have no idea why it wasn't working before when i tried other drivers, this was just one that i hadn't tried yet and decided to give it a shot, soo for now everything seems to be working fine. I really appreciate all the help guys

nvidia's drivers make me punch babies, soooo buggy
-
MMMMMMmmmmmmmm babies.... ("the other other white meat"-Fat B@stard)
-
I say kick the Dox's drivers and go for xfastest
-
e-wrecked, i got dox's 180.43- seem fine. what would you recommend?
-
As I said.. Xfastest's 177.85 - http://www.xfastest.com/viewthread.php?tid=12852&extra=page=1
Scroll down towards the bottom of the page and you'll see the versions available. Oh, and please notice the sexy video cards at the top of the page.
There is nothing that compares to Xfastest when OC'ing.. or running stock. Do the typical clean install.. and all you gotta do is run the setup.exe in Xfastest after cleaning your old drivers completely. When you reboot for the first time, you will get a .dll error. Run msconfig, and go to your startup tab, and disable that nvsvc.dll, or whatever it is called. Then you're golden. -

oh thanks for that E i started running dox bc of that error message and thought that might have been the reason for the mess up but I'll try it again.

hmm.. I know that there have been issues with Vista's Power scheme settings. Possibly it reset to allow for sleep/hybernation/turn off hard disks? The default, even when plugged in is 20 minutes. Possibly that caused the issue? Make sure that's disabled or set to "Never" in your Performance Scheme.
-
hmm...those are set to never like they were the only thing that i have turned on when plugged in is adaptive display? what is that, by the way? thanx e-wrecked
-
never used adaptive display in my life.
-
yeah, no big deal
by the way, just played cod4 and temps on the gpu went up t 86C, is that normal? -
86C? Seems to still be within the safe threshold however I'd highly recommend propping the back of your laptop up with something, bottlecaps, laptop fan, books, whatever. Shaves off at least 5C for me.
-
86? wow. I am getting 95 on multiplayer. lol.
freezes happen.
*dont worry if it blows, BB ADH will replace it -
Your system really shouldn't lock up. That's never a good thing..BB aside. But, 86c is fine. It is a little warm, but not too bad. If you decide to upgrade the CPU in the future, your GPU temps will drop.. Right now, your GPU is doing all of the work, and your CPU is slacking just a lil. With the 7811 my temps were similar with stock CPU, however when I dropped the x9100 in my GPU never came close to 80c. Not saying you need a x9000, but the stock T5800(isnt that right?), is sluggish compared to the processing of your graphics system. Well, this was my experience.. I'm assuming yours would be similar.
GPU failure?? advice plz
