GPU overheating from playing WoW?

So I finally got my P-173XL today. I installed and updated the new video drivers the stickied thread. Then I ran WoW, and after playing for about 5 - 10 mins, my laptop shut down on me.

I knew this was a overheating problem. So I ran HW Monitor, and apparently my GPU core was around 91 - 92C after about 15 mins of WoW. I am running WoW on max settings with 1920x1200 res. Btw this is on a 8800M GTS.

I am not sure what the problem is, should I downgrade the drivers to an older version? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated, as this is really depressing.

 

Do you feel hot air blowing out the left side vent of your laptop? (gpu fan vent) regardless you probably wanna start by either using canned air or a hair dryer SET TO COOL and blow through the vent on the bottom and side to push dust out. it has been the trick for a few also propping the back up an inch or so allows air circulation to the fans and cools everthing down quite a bit as well...

 

It is a brand new laptop, so there are no dust issues. And yes, I do feel hot air coming out of the left vent. It gets really hot when I am playing WoW.

 

the dust thing has happened with brand new out of the box FX's... heat leaving the machine is good at least its not stuck inside it...

 

gaming on a hard surface? couch bed and carpet all cause heat and dust issues..

 

Yep, I am using it on my desktop table.

I am thinking this is an issue with my drivers or something? I am probably completely wrong, but I need something =\.

Did this problem present itself before you changed the out of box drivers?

I usually prefer to use out of the box drivers first. If the games you want to play work fine with those drivers why upgrade?

EDIT: Run GPU-z and see what your GPU clocks are at.

 

Get a laptop cooler pad, or get something that props it up alittle in the back, that solved my problems

I didn't try playing with the stocked drivers. I just installed the new ones because I figured they would be better...

GPU-z shows my clocks at 500,799,1250.

 

Also, If WoW is overheating my GPU so much (which isn't even close to being a GPU demanding game), im wondering what would happen with other games?

 

I know the 8800s ran hot but 91C is definitely on the high side.. Clocks look good... Newer is not always better... Companies usually always ship stuff with the most stable, tried and true drivers to avoid customer calls inregards to problems with newer unproven drivers. Download the drivers from the gateway website and try switching back, see if that fixes things

 

Ok, so I have tried everything I could. I reinstalled the stocked drivers, and I get the same problem. I tried some other game, and same thing, my GPU hits 90C in about 10 - 15 mins of gameplay.

So is my GPU defective? Because I hope to god its not. You guys think undervolting my GPU might fix the problem or something?

Any other kind of suggestions?

 

DON'T mess with GPU power in a laptop

 

yeah your laptop shouldn't be doing that but if you try to complain about it they will just tell you that's what happens when you play intensive games but we all know that wow is not intensive... i dont know if any one has tried this but try playing an older game and see if you can get the same affect and if you do then you can complain to gateway or to who ever you bought it from...

 

Get the stand flynnaz suggested. I couldn't believe what a difference it made. I can barely hit 71C these days and idle at 39C-41C

 

But don't you think there might be something defective with the GPU/Drivers? I mean hitting around 90C playing WoW for about 10 mins seems kinda crazy.

Also, I just updated my drivers to Dox's customised forceware, and my temps are around 70 - 75C, on 1280X1024 Res and medium-high settings. They seem to stay around that area. Before these drivers even these settings would make my GPU hit 90+ and crash.

Unfortunetly, even with these new drivers I can't run games on high settings on 1920X1200 res without the GPU crashing in 10 mins. =\

Its such a weird problem...

 

I normally play at least several hours a night on WOW with all the settings on high and my temperature doesn’t usually get above 64C. In fact I have a macro that turns up the settings higher than you can set them with the slider (yes the WOW dial does go up to 11). The only concession I make to heat is to use a cooler which has the main benefit of making the left side get exposed to fresh air. The other thing I have found that keeps the heat down is to use a “/console maxfps 30” command in WOW that prevents the frame rate going too excessive. If 24 fps is good enough for movies then it seems to me that 30 fps should be good enough for video games.

 

u can try lowering the res, if you dont mind non native res.
my gpu never went above 74c but i am restricted to 1440*900

 

Were you still getting 90C AFTER you propped up the back of the laptop or used a laptop stand to allow better airflow to the bottom vents?
