Gateway has a very nasty habit of completely locking down the BIOS and clock speeds of their laptop GPUs (as I know from personal experience with the NX860XL). I am very much considering this laptop, but this lock down not only disallows over/underclocking, but also has caused some major problems with power management and GPU issues within the software/hardware for some.
This could make or break the laptop for me, does anyone know if this GPU is locked down? Would it be possible for someone to test if this is over/underclockable? RivaTuner would be the best program for this, it can change clock speeds, and will show if the speed actually went through to the hardware.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this for me!

I just purchased a p-6831 and right now I can not get anything to overclock the GPU, I have tried the BIOS as well as Riva tuner and Ntune. So i hope this helps you out. I love the laptop eiter way, and it just might be a drive update or software update to Riva Tuner to alow for the change.

Well shoot. Sounds like its locked.

He's doing something wrong then, because Ntune was able to overclock with the stock drivers, as well as 167.58 and 169.28

This is very good news! Thanks Xeon. Also, I read through the other thread but I am still unsure what drivers you had the best performance with. What drivers gave the most Marks?
-
Best 3dmark came from 167.43, but best actual gaming performance seems to be 169.28.

I'll have to check out those 169.28 drivers. I'm also looking to get rid of the processor bottleneck. A T7300 C2D for $100 seems like a steal...

I was able to overclock with Ntune and the 167.46 drivers (which i believe are the stock drivers). I was NOT able to overclock with Rivatuner however.

GPU question for those with p-171 / p-6831.
