I removed the original thermal strip from the northbridge, in my 6860 a couple of months ago.. Since then I tried with some ATI cooler (someone in here suggested them) which were at least better than not having anything on it. The GPU would "only" jump to 87c - but I was tired of this aswell.. So I tried something else: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310092298684&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123

But as I just found out, theyre as bad (or worse) than the old ones, since the temp still jumps 88-89c.

Anyone got a clue whats next for me? :(

switching thermal compounds on your northbridge isn't going to help much with gpu temps.

A couple folks have tried this on their northbridge on 7811s --> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=268081 It's better than a thermal pad, but takes a lot more work. I don't know about the 6860, but the gpu in the 7811 makes direct contact with the HPA with just a little thermal paste, from what I've been told, so the copper mod would not work or be needed. I don't know about the 6860.

Thats weird though.. If i take the thermal tape off my northbridge, the system shuts off when gaming due to high temps...?

Thanks, ill look into that thread :D

Likely it shuts off because you are overheating the northbridge, not the GPU. Get a copy of HWMONITOR, http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php and run it in a window while gaming (also in a window) and watch which sensors go up. I suspect that with no thermal pad on your northbridge, there is a tiny little air gap between the chip and heatpipe and you will see TZS0 or TZS1 climb before shutdown or downthrottle occurs.

Either way- what should I get for my Northbridge? Because I didnt have these problems before I accidentally removed the thermal strip :S

Well, you can do the copper mod. WarlordOne has a nice picture of one here-> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4015385&postcount=6
and E-Wrecked wrote some nice instructions here-> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4045367&postcount=99

The other option is to get a new thermal pad. You can get them here-> http://www.chomerics.com/products/thermagap_g974.htm and E-Wrecked will tell you how to get them for free here-> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4014268&postcount=4

Are you are talking about what thermal pad thickness to get? Does your heatpipe assembly look like this? If so, then I believe they are the same between the 6860 and the 7811.

Or if you like, send me a 6860 and I can tell you for sure :)
