I'v spoke with gateway reps and they are no help what soever iv tried to reinstall windows, scan for viruses, updated all drivers to latest versions. For some reason when i leave my gateway laptop idle for over 20 minutes or so and the screen is blank or lid is closed. I come back to use it and everything ends up to be frozen. I cant run anything at all i have to force restart it pressing the power button down. I don't get whats wrong here can someone enlighten me? Gateway people wont help at all they just keep saying reinstall windows...

Things i'v done to try and fix to make answers narrowed. Iv changed power options to never shut anything down. Disabled hibernation, sleep. It seems to work fine if screen saver is on for like 20 min and i come back to use it, it seems to work. Can someone please help i'v done everything i can.

Edit: I have the standard Gateway P-7811Fx with Vista home premium 64x

I'm sorry, I didn't understand the exact conditions of the freeze. Can you go into hibernate, and then come out? And when you say "frozen", do you mean that the screen stays black, or does it actually freeze w/ stuff on it? Like, say if you change it so that the screen never turns off and screen saver never turns on (which I highly recommend), will it still freeze?

Hibernate can be a problem. Don't know if you are set to use hibernate but I never use it.

well i disabled hibernate thru cmd. What happens when i say freezes is when i come back to use my computer from doing somthing after 20+ minutes. The screen looks normal i can move my mouse around and stuff i then open something up. The mouse busy icon comes up and whatever i open up stays there then says not responding then everything on the laptop stops responding. i cant even click the start button. When i press ALT CTRL DEl my screen goes black but i see the mouse curser and could move that around.

Do you normally keep your unit plugged in? Do you have this problem when you are only running off battery power? Do you know what your graphics card is clocked at?

actually my problem is different. My freezes. (screen image remains on, and all operations are stopped. No keyboard functions no mouse movements.)

You might want to try the system file checker command from a command prompt, to see if you have some system file that's corrupted and is keeping laptop from reloading to desktop. Get your XP or Vista CD/DVD and load in tray. All programs---Run---type cmd for a command prompt. Then type sfc /scannow. O.S. will check your system files against files on installation CD to make sure of integrity, and if any are corrupted will rewrite them from the CD/DVD. Always a good place to check. :)
