    It has been too long since I took a good look at Gateway. From what multiple sales people have told me, I am now confused. Does Gateway own eMachines, and other companies too? Has yet another company bought out Gateway?
    Does it look like Gateway will be around for some time yet?
    Just checking since I am now wondering if I should consider looking at one.

    hahaha, now I can hate on gateway and emachines as much as I hate on acer. Not that I was particularly fond of those brands to begin with... beats HP though.

    God, I hate HP.

    Now for yet another question, now that my original one was answered.
    Does this mean that Acer has the Aspire as their flagship model, with Gateway being mid range, and eMachines as the entry level? OR, does it simply mean that Acer has the most money of these 3 ?

    it means acer owns both of the other two. they are still three different companies and while they might have some cooperation between each other, they are far from fully integrated.

    kind of like how ebay owns craiglist. yet they sort of do they own things.

    It basically means that Acer owns the other two. Gateway has its budget/consumer/somewhat better performing models as well.
    T = budget
    M = Consumer
    P = Performance

    Nothing like the Acer Ferrari models certainly, but still semi-decent. As for high end Acer, I'm thinking Ferrari rather than Aspire. Aspire's more of their consumer and Extensa their budget line.

    For example, Dell owns Alienware too, but it has its own gaming line as well.

    I think you mean "their own things."

    Craigslist also sued Ebay and Ebay sued Craigslist too. :D

    I always thought the Acer Aspire was hilarious looking.

    Not to be a douche... but it is funny looking.

    I've always hated Gateway until the FX, but man, I am overly surprised with the quality of this notebook. (Until then, Sony had blown any of my other notebooks away)

    The only prior experience I had with Gateway before I bought my FX was my wife's(then gf's) low end desktop. I moved from the cheapest Compaq laptop bestbuy had in Oct of 06 to the FX....HUGE, ENORMOUS step up. I *****ed daily about how slow that f'in thing was. I still got $280 for it on ebay though this past week.

    Thanks very much. I didn't know that's how the line up is sorted out.
    I am really shocked to find out that Dell owns Alienware.

    Since I am still in the process of doing my homework various brands and their lineup in each category, let me ask your opinion of Sony. For example, would take a budget Sony over let's say the consumer model of most other mainstream brands?

    As part of my "polling" process, which brand or make is your favorite in the "mainstream" lines? By mainstream, I mean I am not talking about $3,000.00 or higher price range.

    I have a Sony AR605. 17" Work-Horse. It is built like a brick-house, and quality is superb... but with Sony, there is a lot of wasted space. It is a 17" notebook, with no numberpad. There is a bunch of open space around the screen. Mine also came with two "always on" pixels. I paid around $1,200 for it.

    Honestly, the Gateway puts the Sony in it's place, in all fields.

    I hate HP and Acer for the same reason. They both manufacture systems of terrible build quality. Acers use all low low low end parts that die off regularly. HP have gratuitous thermal issues that I see resulting in dead motherboards and fans very commonly. Both, excluding the HP business class are of general cheap build (flimsy plastics, poorly enforced screw holds) and break down under standard use. I don't really hate Gateway or Emachines, that was more of a joke.

    If I have to exclude Sager and Asus... IBM for their extreme durability, followed next probably Dell, mainly for their customer service. Sadly, the quality of Dell computers have been declining a lot in the past year or so, even the XPS line is degrading. Sony is pretty good, but I see lots of dead hard drives in Sonys because of the way they mount their HDDs... plus they're pretty overpriced (in general)

    With laptops, I go for IBM or Dell, depending on needs.
    I avoid Toshiba (more build quality issues, they're actually right beside sager on my list), Compaq (even cheaper versions of most HPs), HP, and Acer.
    I avoid them like the plague.

    At this point I may as well confess that what I am trying to do, on a very slender budget, is to get something either from Best Buy or Circuit City without going much more than $1,000.00 I realize that is not easy to do, even with sales, and getting the specs I'd like. That is why I left out Sager, Asus, and a few others. The more I read, the more I get the feeling I will have this narrowed to very little, but the last thing I want to do is have my money go down the drain by getting something that will not survive long.
    Wish I had paid more attentiont the last time I saw a Gateway FX. I liked the sound and looks of the Toshiba, and a couple of others. I have learned to absolutely quit listening to sales people at these stores.
    Thanks to everyone for the input.

    Yeah, the Toshiba SLi's sell a lot from BB and CC. Of course, anyone who does their homework knows SLi 8600m GT's don't perform nearly as high as the 8800m's, but they out-sold the Gateways for a while.

    Hopefully you find what you need, MTH!

    I'd definitely look into a Gateway FX, sounds like what you want and the quality is pretty good from what I understand. They sell them pretty regularly, just wait it out a bit and keep your ears open.

    Thanks again for the advice.
    I will keep my eyes open. I can always take a chance on something else if I really need to. What I have read on this forum for the last month has helped me to weed out a lot of potential buys. Now that things are a narrowed down further this should help me in avoiding things that would be questionable for durability, although I do treat all my stuff very carefully.
