I have had it for under a year and out of the blue it began shutting down randomly. I figured it might have something to do with overheating so I took a normal desk fan and put it next to the laptop which made it not overheat. My question is how can I tell if the fan in the laptop won't turn on for software reasons or because its just broken?

Have you cleaned it in the past year? Dust has a bad tendency to wrap around our fans and clog it all up.

I don't have compressed air right now, so i just took a straw and kinda blew into it carefully.

I would not recommend using the straw :D If anything you would push and create more blockage.

    cheers ...

Thanks for the advice both of you, but i was really careful in that i didn't actually put the straw into the vent itself, I just used it to direct the air i was exhaling. Actually, it worked like a charm, a lot of dust came out and the computer appears to be fine, for now.
