I've been researching a new laptop and have narrowed my decision down to these two. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to which is better? I've seen a lot of review on the 1040, but perhaps since the 4540 is new (offered at Best Buy), there isn't as much data. Price is about the same, with HP a bit higher. I definately want a Centrino and gaming is not a factor at all. I will primarily be using the system for basic Office programs and wireless internet browsing.

The first noticible difference between the two is that the 4540 only has 32MG of shared video memory. Will this effect my online video loads? What exactly does the video memory effect? Also, the 4540 is 15" and the 1040 is 14 widescreen. The 4540 also come standard w/ dvd rw and 80 gig hd (for about $1100), I would be paying probably $200 more for the HP1040.

Any and all suggestions would be most helpful!! Thanks.

What did you decide on? The 4540 is the M210 through Gateway. Dedicated video is useful for gaming, video rendering (home movies) and 3 D Applications. The Gateway has poor speakers and a slower harddrive.
