I know esp on the 7515, many of us have had some wacky usb ports. Some slow speeds reminding us of usb 1.1 because, well... thats what they were operating at. Personally, mine would be fine for a while and then randomly disconnect, and reconnect my usb devices and then tell me i needed to plug the device into a 2.0 port to operate faster. So i got on the Gateway site and talked to "Raymond" who gave me links to all the updates to fix that. The chipset update, media card update, etc. I jsut installed them and havent gotten to test them because I'm at school and didnt bring a flash drive/other hard drive to test... but maybe in a few minutes ill run in the library and ask one of the people if i can borrow their flash drive. Anyways i used HD tune before the updates to test speeds and i would get about 6-14 megs max on an external hd/flash drive, and when it did the reconnect thing i was down to .6-.7 :( ouch. My media card reader for sd, etc was permenantly slow. (.6-.7). So i just wanted to share all of the links with you guys. Make sure you actually go to start and run the application, otherwise you are just extracting to a folder not installing it (for those who arent too tech savvy). I hope these solve a lot of our problems... and the only complaint I have with this notebook.

Hope this is of some help!

*Disclaimer*- Raymond also told me i should be getting 4-6 hours on my notebook battery... and i promptly told him he was crazy and that with a 4000+ with 62W tdp that was next to impossible since a 27W Pentium M or a 25-35W Turion would be hard pressed to hit that.. and with this screen esp. He promptly repealed his statement.

    Thank Scooper.

Edit: These look like the same drivers that I installed when I first got the computer. Please update when you have some results.

well they seem to fix the problem of disonnecting and reconnecting at a slower speed. Iv tested a hard drive usb connected for the better part of the day, steady X-fer speed. These drivers didnt ship with the model. My memory card reader for SD/MC, etc is dreadfully slow, and the driver update didnt fix that :( but everything else is good.

Usb port seem to be running ok, but myself and a gateway tech online determined that my card reader is 1.1... the hardware is. So he said he would be sending me a box so i can send the computer in. This was about 11:30pm monday night. I woke up this morning (12 hours later) and DHL pulled up and had a box for me. I could not believe it! I had gotten the box in 12 hours from when the service order was made. Best Buy took 2 weeks with my computer and all they did was format the **** thing. I am very impressed with Gateway service so far. Amazing!

Yeah, I've also had actually good experiences with them at least trying to be helpful. I had something sent and they had it there in two days I think. Pretty good service. They aren't always the most techno saavy though; like with your 4 - 6 hour battery situation.

Keep us updated as to how things turn out.

Sorry to tell you that USB does not get better with that driver...at least on my 7515. The chipset driver is the first release, the card reader is really a good patch though.
It really seams that USB issues are HW related, probably will send my unit for redpairs when I dont need daily use..like now.

Well actually my usb ports performed better after the driver update for my machine at least. They didnt do any crazy disconnecting and reconnecting at slower speeds like before. My media reader was 1.1 hardware as i said before, and i just went to officeMax and shipped the thing out at the DHL desk in there. The box came 12 hours after the request was made... but i decided that i needed it for class so i waited till today to part with it. Hopefully it will be back at the beginning of next week. I just couldnt send it to best buy again and wait two weeks for nothing to be done but the machine to be formatted.

Please let us know if USB performs better when you receive it back...from what I understand it is a SW issue (which you already resolved) mixed with a HW issue due to not enough voltage for USB controller. When I connect more than one device performance goes lower and lower. Example (HdTune):
External HDD alone : 12MB/s (even this is slow)
External HDD + Creative Webcam (only connected, not in use): 7MB/s for ext HDD.
I spoke to BestBuy huys and they told me to send it to GW for repairs....I doubt they will assume that 7MB/s (or even 12MB/s) is a failure and change my mobo....

    <copied from a similar thread>

Hello - I haven't had any success with updating drivers.

I did try Gateway support chat again and found a tech that had a different solution to all those poster thus far.

He suggested that the solution required "reloading your USB port drivers".

This is how I was instructed to do this:

    1. Please Right Click on the My Computer icons and choose Properties.
    2. Click on the Tab marked Hardware
    3. Click on the Device Manager Button
    4. Click on the + next to Universal serial Bus controllers
    5. Highlight each item under that heading and click uninstall.
    6. Click on the X in the upper-right hand corner of the DEVICE MANAGER window.
    7. Restart the system, and let Windows reload the correct drivers.
    8. Test

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Well I did the above - and all is well (so far so good)

Does this help with transfer speeds for anyone?

but if its a voltage problem then just doing that wont effect the motherboard...
