This will be my fist time buying a laptop pc. I have thoughts on the Gateway 7405GX but I am concerned about battery life. Does anyone know exactly how long it will run under normal, non-gaming conditions. Also I am planning on going to college and thats my concern on battery life. What other notebook computers would you recommend for good battery life, a 1.5-2.0 GHz processor, 400+ FSB? What about video memory? Would 32mb be great for non-gaming? This one comes with 64mb Also, is 256kb cache good? This one has 1mb. Thanks.

for good battery life you'd need to go with a thin and light notebook that focuses on having a mobile processor, light weight and good battery life. this gateway is more of a desktop replacement style notebook, i doubt it has much over 2-hours of battery life tops. however, this notebook does have great specs for the price, the amd64 is a great processor and with a 80GB hard drive, DVD burner and 15.4" bright screen you get a lot of bang for the buck.

What would you recommend? Is there a good notebook out there for around $1400 or less that has good specs and battery life. I don't mind what brand name, just as long as it has some good qualities about it.

Something around 4+ hours if possible. I'm planning on using it for college, with very little gaming. I'm just looking for a good notebook for running word, dvd's and the such. Also, I was planning of buying from Best Buy, but I just can't find a notebook that fits my requirements on their website.

My first question is, "What do you consider good battery life?"

Then, what will be your primary uses for this particular machine?

What about the Gateway Notebook Model: 3520GZ. Does anyone know how long a life the battery has for this laptop? Also, will the 32mb shared video really slow me down? I don't mind too much, but if it really drags I don't care for it.
