I'm looking for a new laptop and I came across this one at Compusa:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=316555&pfp=BROWSE
Possible Issues:
1) Only have 256MB RAM --> Will put another 512MB after buying
2) I am aware that this is really a remodeled eMachine. Is that THAT bad?
3) Is it available to buy (in-stock)? Not sure...
Other than that, it seems to be a GREAT deal for the price. What do you guys think?
If no, have any recommendations?
Here's what I'm looking for:
15.4 inch widescreen
1.5 Ghz or greater Processor
at least 512MB RAM
at least 40gig HD
preferrably not 'integrated graphics'
Oh, and looking to stay around $1000![]()
No HPs or Compaqs

For everything that you're looking for in a notebook...I honestly have to say at that price, it can't be beat.
*Just don't know what speed the harddrive is...& I couldn't find it being sold anywhere else (other than Gateway, CompUSA)
This is a great deal for not only an Athlon64, but a mobile one at that.
Decent GPU, screen, quality/build IMO.
P.S.- I just noticed that the keyboard has a downfall...

If all you are doing is surfing, office and burning a few discs, you don't need a dedicated video card. Laptops with a dedicated graphics card are much more expensive unless you consider used. Take a look at this:

Has the glossy screen and Pentium M for good battery life. You'd have enough left over to upgrade to a faster hard drive which will increase overall system performance. Good Luck.
I was robbed by a sweet little old lady on a motorized cart and I didn't even see it coming.

That's a great deal on that computer! The key will be to find a store that has one. None of the CompUSA's here in Houston (4M+ people) had one, so the trick will be to find that one store in Iowa that has one, and the drive there for the "In-store pickup only".
Keep us posted on what you decide.

This model was discontinued sometime back. If it is a brand new one then it probably would have been in the warehouse for more than 4-5 months.(7422GX, 7426GX are the latest).
Also some emachines/Gateway models were prone to crack their hinges.
There are many refurbrished ones in the market since many people returned these.
The HDD probably will be 4200rpm...since AFAIK they never came with 5400rpm hdd's.

That Gateway, a few notes:
-The eMachines M6000 series is based on the Gateway 7000, not the other way around, for what that's worth.
-The Hard Drive is only 4200RPM, regrettably, and the CD-ROM read spead is only 24x.
-The graphics card is actually quite powerful when overclocked.
-It runs fairly cool.
-It's heavy as a cinderblock.
-The processor and especially the graphics card will both far outpace that Acer; I don't see how anyone thinks that that Acer is a better buy.[?]
-The Gateway 7000 does have a glossy widescreen.
That is an excellent price for that computer, I'd say go for it (but be sure to get more RAM).[8D]
