Hey all. I am new to these forums, and I had a quick question. I am having problems with my 7422GX gateway overheating and just randomly shutting off. I was curious as to what course of action I should take? It is out of warranty, so I figured my only option was to take apart the laptop and make sure everything is clean. What would you guys suggest?

Clean out the PC (you are right), get a Cooling fan, and possibly apply AS5. Check this out: Cooling Guide.

I will certainly do that then. I just wanted to make sure that it is overheating though. What happens is that the fans inside the laptop will randomly run at full power, and then about 5 seconds after that, the computer will just shut off. Would overheating cause this? Thanks.

I guess not. I will try cleaning it out first and seeing if that helps. Thanks for the reply, Greg.

The eMachines M68XX series are the same machine and AFAIK there's been no definitive solution for them too. Mine does it for a while then will go months without it happening. You might look in the eMachines section for more info.

This is a rather well-known problem (except for the solution :( ) People have tried replacing and cleaning fans, etc., without success. I have had the problem myself and have come up with some workarounds. I don't know why they work...

    1. run on battery power, at least to boot up
    2. use an external monitor
    3. put an extra load on the CPU (yes I know that sounds strange but it beats crashing). I have written a small java program to help accomplish this (attached). You can adjust the percentage, default is 30%. Just double-click on the .jar file, if it doesn't work you may need a Java runtime environment from java.com. Also here are links to other forums that I believe are about the same issue, I posted my solution to some of these as well.
