Are there any owners of this laptop? How would you rate this laptop? I have yet to find anything on it.

I was curious as to what it scores on 3DMark 06, and whats the quality of the screen/keyboard/build. Thanks alot!

Well the problem is I gotta stick to Newegg, and it's either 1449.99 for the Asus G50vt X2 or 1599.99 for the 7801u. I like the gateway so far

Surely the 1gb 9800M GTS cannot be a total waste compared to the 512meg version? I hear that GTA4 for instance is very video card memory hungry and it could help there maybe?

I'll bet the price difference of this over the 7811 still isn't worth it but I don't think the 1gb version is a total waste is it?

Given the specs of the 7801u, the price isnt' terrible. However, even with teh 1gb gpu, the value vs the 7811 just isn't worth it at all. If you can get a 7811, get it, and use the money that you save to upgrade your 7811. If you can't get the 7811, then the 7801u isn't a bad choice.

The 7801u isn't overpriced, it's just not as good a value as the 7811.

How would you guys rate the build quality of the laptop? I need a laptop to have a bright crisp screen with great build quality.

gateway isn't necessarily known for a great build quality... and the screens on the new FX lines have had some ghosting issues. Mine is perfect in both quality and screen, but others have had troubles. If those are your top priorities, you might want to look into a Sager.

I have been using the 7801u, which I ordered from Newegg, for about 3 weeks now and I am very happy with it.

My out of the box 3dMark06 score is in my signature. I got mine for 1549.99, but if I could have gotten the 7811FX for under 1000 like some people, I would have went that way. I am deployed right now and my only options that I trusted were ordering from Newegg. This laptop was still cheaper than Dell, Alienware, Sager, with the same or close to same components.

As for the extra MB on the GPU, people were talking saying that it would really come into play as higher resolutions. I ran 3dMark06 at 1920x1200 and my score was an even 7000, a 7811FX owner ran his at 1920x1200 and scored 7011 3dMark06.

My scores were achieved with out of the box drivers and settings. I am suspecting that the 7811FX scores were achieved after much tweaking and updating.

I have a new copy of Vista 64 on order from newegg to update my old laptop with before selling it and I plan on using the disk to do a fresh install on my 7801u and will then tweak Vista, update drivers, and post some new scores to have a better comparison.

Like I said I am deployed right now and downloading updates and optimizing is a little more tedious than usual.

Read my review on Newegg you will see that I absolutely love the screen on the 7801u.

As for sound quality, I use earbuds all the time, since I don't wanna disturb the other 7 guys that live in the same B-hut as me. I am sure it could be better but we are talking about laptop sound, is there such thing as "Great"?

Some laptops like the x305 have 4 harmon kardon speakers and a subwoofer built in

If the card had a 512bit bus, then it wouldnt be a waste, but it doesnt. It is a powerful card, but it cannot utilize that much memory.
